I recently moved into a condo downtown and some of the issues we've been tackling is the lack of privacy and noise. Our windows are quite large, with the one in the living room running at about 8' wide and 6' tall. Because our suite is on the fourth floor, the busy intersection underneath gets quite loud during the day.

We've gone to a few department stores to see if we could find some coverings that would suit our condo well. We're trying to refrain from heavy shades as my roommate is highly allergic to dust. Some people recommended celluar shades by Levolor, which are supposed to let light in and keep sound out. However, because we are on a budget, I wanted to scope out some of my other options first.

Are there any good places in Toronto that make custom-sized blinds?

Unfortunately, as with all things, you generally get what you pay for. If sound attenuation is a concern, that is probably going to cost. I'm no expert and I don't know your budget, but you may want to try www.alleen.com. I think they have two locations, one of which is at College Park (444 Yonge). Window coverings are a big investment but your quality of life depends on it and for resale down the line it's a big plus. Another option is to get "educated" by a high end shop on your options and then try and find the same product for less up in the Decorating District (Dufferin-Orfus-Caledonia area). Good luck with your search!

Thanks for the tips, NIL! I wish I saw your reply sooner. I already purchased some shades from Home Depot. I got the Levolor ones with Energy Shield - not only did they make them in custom sizing, and help reduce noise, but apparently they have additional insulation desgined to lower my heating costs.

Definitely something worth checking out for those who are looking to save money this winter.
