Here is a rare find in the Streets of Toronto, at the Southwest Corner of Donmills and Eglington.

It still the regular rate for a pay phone $0.50, but where is the card reader where I can shove my quick change card or credit card?

With small bit of graffiti on it too.

One has to wonder how long pay phones will be around for.

I'm surprised they're not all removed. It's so hard to find a pay phone the past few years that I don't even bother looking for phone. Pay as you go cell phones at 7-11 are cheaper unless you plan to have long conversations.

Ahh actually I think there was 2 at STC. Wonder if it's still there.

A genuine NT Payphone-a dying breed?

Pro: I remember those Northern Telecom payphones well-are they much harder to find nowadays? For 50 cents how long can you talk for locally?

I remember that certain local phone companies in the US used them-like Rochester,NY Telephone-I recall that if I had Canadian coins to use they were always accepted-unlike US made payphones with slug magnets.

In case anyone does not know,Canadian coins other then the Loonie or Toonie are made of a much purer Nickel content then US coins-which are basically mostly Copper and will not stick to a magnet.

The one nearest me - on the south west corner of Logan and Withrow - was removed about a year ago. I had such fond memories of it - when I moved into my place in '90 the previous owners had left the alarm system on and I had to rush out and phone Chubb to figure out how to shut it off.

Where pay phones remain, the tattered phone books are rarely usable.

A friend who is on welfare claims that there are still some around town where you can call for 25 cents.

There are over 10 payphones within a 5 minute walk along King West from Dufferin to Jameson. There, they are in banks of 2s or 3s.

Perhaps the area isn't worthy enough to replace that payphone?

Respectfully,
Josef

I recently saw pay phones with keyboards to text. I can understand using them for TTY reasons, but they said that you could also text with it. WTF is with that? I mean, I'm not sure if I'd want to spend that much money just to text through a payphone that other people might see as spam.

Thanks for that Mustapha.

If my experience (having not used a payphone for years) is taken as representative of an overall decline in usage, we can expect them to be in worse shape as the amount of money made on them decreases.
