It's just generic sprawl like the other 70% of the GTA.
Mills Pond is nearby and it's actually very pretty, and active during the summer.

Yeah, I'd definitely advise to take the train unless there are serious problems with doing so.
I know one or two people that live in the area, it seems like pretty generic sprawl. Looks safe, friendly and pretty livable.

What is the significance of east or west of bathurst? Something other than boundary lines?

Well, depending exactly where you are, you could be pretty close to Richmond Hill Station.
