Glazed new wing forms dramatic backdrop to historic core
Canada’s National Ballet School ranks as one of the finest ballet training institutions in the world, on par with the Royal Ballet School in London, the School of American Ballet in New York, and the Paris Opera Ballet School. It is the only institution in North America to offer an integral program of professional dance training, advanced level academic education, and residential living all on one site. Approximately 700 students participate in the school’s programs each week.
Project Grand Jeté provides for the construction of state-of-the-art facilities that ensure an ongoing evolution of the school’s standards and programs. It weaves together historic buildings with new construction such as the Celia Franca Training Centre. Located at the school’s Jarvis Street Campus, the Celia France Training Centre surrounds Northfield House, an existing historic structure. On the north and south sides of the new construction, bridges link to other nearby buildings.
Clad mainly in glass, the Celia Franca Centre acts as a backdrop to the nearby masonry structures, minimizing the impact of its overall mass on the streetscape. KPMB Architects organized the building as a series of three asymmetrically stacked horizontal platforms with floor-to-ceiling glazing. These platforms become stages to the city, while the city forms a backdrop to the dancers.
The architect enclosed the open space between Northfield House and the Celia Franca Centre to create a town square, a new heart of the school. This three-story atrium also serves as a forecourt to the historic building. It features an L-shaped Corten steel fireplace and a large digital projection screen. As the nexus where all of the school’s major support programs converge—including the café, physio department, and resource center—the town square embodies the school’s philosophy to nurture the development of the whole person—body, mind, and soul.
