Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport

My cousin and I went to Schiphol Airport last tuesday. He worked there as an ambulance driver for 5 years, so he knew how to get to every remote corner of the airport. Schiphol is Europe's 4th largest airport.

The control tower

A prizefighter airline.

Freshly back from Asia.

It was infact a nice day, with temperatures around 14 degrees.

Small-time airplanes ;)

An almost classical plane.

KLM's offices close to the runway.

The airport's smallest runway (seen from a nearby dike)

This was just bizarre. These are actually a couple of kerosine lines, on publicly accesible land.

The Martinair cargo depot.

There's busses all over the airport. Their main purpose is to move local employees around.

This is my favorite picture, I like how the sun breaks through the clouds in the middle of the pic.

Standing on the beginning of a runway

Incoming!

More offices coming soon

Amsterdam's skyscrapers can be seen in the background

Bonus: the area around Leiden's central railway station.

Thanks for watching!

Great pics, Ronald, of a great airport! That "almost classical" DC-3 is indeed a classic, and the Martinair Cargo MD11 operates to YYZ once a week on Wednesdays..

Thx for sharing these..

It's a great airport. I had the longest walk to baggage claim ever in here though - I reckon easily over 1km.

And had the most interesting landing of all (Transavia) at Schiphol too. I highly recommend flying Transavia, no really I do. :)

Thanks for providing those great pics, Ronald! Amsterdam is an excellent place for international plane spotting. Schipol and Munich are my two favourite airports in Europe.

I'm looking forward to the new Berlin Brandenburg International in the next few years - construction has finally begun on what will probably be the most spectacular new airport in the world, to compliment the most incredible new central train station in the world, also in Berlin.

Thanks everyone.
SimplyDan, do you know where in Berlin Brandenburg Airport will be built? I am there in 3 months, and besides checking out the new Lehrter Bahnof, I think it will be interresting to see if the're making any progress on the city's new airport. Judging by your pictures, it looks absolutely great!

Berlin-Brandenburg International is being constructed on the site of the old Schoenefeld Airport in East Berlin. They have already completed the high-speed ICE connection to the site (the airport will be built on top of a high-speed train station) - once completed it will only take you a matter of minutes to get from the centre of the city out to the new terminal - similar to Frankfurt. At the moment there probably isn't much to see at Schoenefeld... I believe major terminal work won't be visible for at least another year or so.

Simply Dan, do you know of any links where i could get detailed pictures of what the new Berlin airport looks like. The official website does not offer any eyecandy. As far as Shicphol is concerned, I would say it is one of the nicest ariports i have been to but I too had to walk quite a bit. Nonetheless, I think Brussels Airport is the worst in terms of walking, especially if you go there via a regional flight. (my fellow passengers and I literally had to walk for 25 minutes until we got close to the exit)

Here are a few more images of the new BBI that I found:

Good photos Ronald! You got close-up views which I assume most people wouldn't be able to see.

Can't help agreeing that it is bizarre to have fuel lines running across such a public area, close to the airport; do I dare to say that this looks like a tempting target for a terrorist.

Interesting perspectives of Schiphol. ^ I was thinking the same thing about that fuel line.

The interior renderings of the Berlin airport look great- very Calatrava.

I like how they are planning on building the airport on top of an underground high speed train station. Schiphol has the same setup, you can get from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station in about 20 minutes, I believe. Trains run very frequent, at least once every 10 minutes.

The fuel lines are just bizarre, I was shocked to see they were just lying around there, on publicly accesible land, with no security at all. The entire airport wasn't too secured at all.
