All Canadian Hockey League?

Could it work? What would it take, how many teams?

If the NHL were to split into two leagues it could work. The Canadian league would likely expand to 10-12 teams and the American league would contract to maybe 18-20. The two would be about equal in terms of money and talent. The winner of each league could play for the Stanley Cup. You could even invite KHL and European league teams to compete.

That said, I don't see it ever happening. The NHL brand, history, and organization is too strong for it to split. Not to mention the Canadian public is pretty insecure about doing anything on our own when it comes to sports. We'll probably see 2-3 teams move back to Canada eventually but that's it.

Slightly off topic, the IIHF wants to relaunch the European hockey champions league next season. That'll be great for the game if it happens.
