After more than 35 years in service, the Hawker-Siddely H4 subway car made its last trip along the Bloor-Danforth subway line this morning before it heads to the scrap yard. Although perhaps not the most significant event, a host of transit fanatics and photographers were on board for last rites. Commuters, on the other hand, will likely be thankful that the H4 is being retired before another summer arrives. The combination of a lack of air conditioning and padded vinyl seats was a bit deadly on the hottest of days.

The last TTC subway car with fan coils, orange seating, and yellow doors, everything about the interior design reeks of that unmistakable 1970s aesthetic. The H-series trains were built between 1965 and 1990 at the Thunder Bay plant. Although the H4 will no longer ride the rails, the H5 and H6 are still in service. With the arrival of more Toronto Rockets, the Commission can finally retire its oldest car. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross announced yesterday that the H4 would be making its last return trip from Kennedy to Kipling, which brought out enough transit geeks to leave commuters confused as to what all the fuss was about. Some complained that it was far too much attention for a subway train, while another asked me to snap a photo of her on these, "decrepit seats." Not everyone, it would seem, was beset by nostalgia.

I lived in The Junction and then on The Danforth for about 2 years in total and had many rides on those trains. I will miss those seats, though I don't find the newer trains seats to be that bad. What I really loved about the H4's was when the lights would go out and you would ride for through the tunnels in darkness.

For some reason, the video decided not to work as the H4 was departing Kennedy for Greenwood considering I shot most of the trip from Kipling.

The video of H4 is at Islington to Kipling

At Kennedy

Coral reefs in Lake Ontario? Global warming isn't that bad!

They were sold to the highest bidder. Presumably this is based on scrap value.

Chicago is already planning for global warming by planting palm trees. Maybe Toronto should do the same and create coral reefs.

Farewell to the TTC H4 Subway Cars: Will any be preserved?

They should save some of these old cars for the TTC Museum.

MARK: I agree with you here-I noticed the topic of the retirement of TTC's H4 Subway
cars and wonder myself if any will go to be preserved and not scrapped...

The H4 cars still look good for their age and the TTC has taken good care of them...

If these cars were to be dumped in the Atlantic to be offshore reefs they may hold
up OK against the salt water but I think that their aluminum will bring a good scrap
price...even better then some of NYC's retired cars used that are stainless steel...
