not good.

Why not? It's just a chart... For what I care they could move it to five minutes past midnight, but it would make no difference to any rational person. I'd still be logging in and looking for info on skyscrapers.

A rational person perhaps would do some research as to what this clock represent, and think about the issues that lead to its' creation and how it will relate to the future of civilization, not dismissing it out of hand.

Wait, come to think of it, they won't - because we all know "rational" could very well mean someone who is planning for his/her next consumptionfest instead.

The point I"m making is that they've been plotting this chart for decades and nothing has come of it. Even Jehova's Witnesses have a better track record.

blixa:

Well, we've also been "preaching" for years that murder and rape is unacceptable behaviour - that hasn't stopped happening, so therefore, we should forget about it.

In terms of rationality, what is this clock supposed to represent? Climate change and the threat of nuclear war have nothing in common. How can they be averaged together to correspond to a subjective representation of a clock - particularly a clock that does not keep time?

There is nothing rational about fear-mongering.

bizorky:

I think it's pretty evident that the clock is symbolism, referring to the seriousness of the challenges we're facing. If one is unable to distinuish the symbolism and chose to interpret these things literally, I would imagine their rationality is suspect.

AoD

Yes, the clock is a symbol - for fear. It does not make reference to a likelihood for the outcome of anything in particular, so it can't actually play a role in stopping anything. It's effect is purely emotional.

But speaking or rational people behaving badly, here is one of my favourites:

"Isn't the only hope for the planet that the industrialised civilizations collapse? Isn't it our responsibility to bring that about?" -- Maurice Strong, head of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and Executive Officer for Reform in the Office of the Secretary General of the United Nations.

I adore the clock. I get all nostalgic whenever I hear they're changing it ... I remember the Bay of Pigs, and the Soviets' Czech invasion, and scary Ronnie Ray Gun ...

But then I was born in 1953 - the scariest year ever, the YEAR OF FEAR AND DREAD !!!!!!!!

Bugs me that the year of the Cuban Missile Crisis, arguably the closest we've come to nuclear war, was relatively care-free according to that chart.

Yes, it is quite telling that you would post that. Strong is the former president of Power Corporation and made his money in oil and energy. The quote doesn't come from the location you attribute it to and is completely out of context. Here's the full quote from the original Ezra Levant article, but I can Google too and see you quoted from Junkscience.com, something certainly worth reading up on:

In 1990, Strong told a reporter a fantasy scenario for the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland — where 1,000 diplomats, CEOs and politicians gather “to address global issues.â€

Strong, naturally, is on the board of the World Economic Forum. “What if a small group of these world leaders were to conclude the principal risk to the earth comes from the actions of the rich countries?...

In order to save the planet, the group decides: Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn’t it our responsibility to bring this about?â€

Yes, it is quite telling that you would post that.

Not so much telling, but more like what you read into it. That I can't stop you from doing, can I?.

If you must know, the quote was emailed to me by my brother. He has a particular taste for the absurd. As to where he found it, who knows. It was more than a year ago. Nevertheless, these things have a way of making their way around.

Satisfied?

Probably not.

And good for you with your Googling skills! Bravo!

"There is nothing rational about fear-mongering."

You are unable to distinguish between alleged "fear-mongering" and entirely well-founded, enormously serious concerns. I do not understand why, and it doesn't matter - thankfully, voices such as yours are very rapidly being marginalized to the weird fringe where they have always belonged. This stuff is simply too important to bother listening to meaningless 'dissent' any longer. Get out of the way while those of us existing in the actual world finally get on with trying to save it.

You are unable to distinguish between alleged "fear-mongering" and entirely well-founded, enormously serious concerns.

As a propagandist, you are a failure. You actually confuse a created symbol with the actual state of the world. The point of this clock is to suggest that there is a countdown to the end of the world. I've met people in the subway with similar points of view, I don't pay much attention to them, either.

Your passion to "save" the world suggests that you have some god-like qualities. Do you? Your desire to "marginalize" dissent has a long and nasty history? Planning to utilize any tried and true techniques in your quest to squash those who disagree with your crusade?

As for having to listen to meaningless dissent, no one is forcing you to listen. You appear to have been choosing to listen.

Get out of the way while those of us existing in the actual world finally get on with trying to save it.

The overindulgent pomposity of this statement made me laugh. You planning to "save the world" by example, or by dictation?
