Scarborough gets nearly $40 million for affordable housing. Now the 'tougher work' begins
Non-profits are getting $39.5 million in municipal tax exemptions, grants and other incentives to build nearly 500 affordable homes in Scarborough.
“We have to raise millions of dollars,” Rev. Alex Wilson, former minister of St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, said.
Won on the third try, the church’s $8.6 million in property tax exemptions and waived development fees, start what is “in some ways the tougher work of keeping the momentum going and getting it done,” he added.
The church at 3817 Lawrence Ave. E. plans to rebuild itself under an 11-storey tower, the St. Stephen’s Community Apartments, with 111 units assigned by East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and Reena, a charity for people with developmental disabilities.
The church, seeking to help fill Scarborough’s tremendous need for affordable housing, also applied through Open Door for a $2.8-million grant but did not receive it.
