2018 Municipal Election: Toronto Council Races

How many non-incumbent winners will there be on council?

  • Total voters
    22
  • Poll closed .
Just wondering what people think of a https://www.progresstoronto.ca/ showing up and trying to sway the election towards "Progressive" candidates. Might not be apparent to most people but this looks like an NDP operation.

Alex Mazer is a card-carrying Liberal. A lot of the members like Shawn Micallef have no known Dipper connections.

Similar to the 'progressive bloc' on council, I'd say it's mostly NDP, but there have been a few outliers, notably left-leaning Liberals like Adam Vaughan, Kyle Rae and Shelley Carroll.

Now the bad news for wards in the old City of Toronto, East York, and York.

From link.

The Councillors from wards 11, 12, 16 and 17 have to contend with the likes of Ford, Holyday, and Mammoliti because they'll be forced to be in the Etobicoke-York Community Council .

Most of what will become Wards 11, 12, 16 and 17 has been part of Etobicoke York Community Council for years. Sarah Doucette has been on EYCC for years. But, yes, she is the odd woman out on that committee.

Did Chin Lee resign his seat or just go on leave to run provincially? He lost as well.
Answer easily found on the Members of Council page at https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/council/members-of-council/

To make it easier, he resigned. Ward 41 is vacant. (Interestingly the ghastly Minnan-Wong, who also lost, did NOT resign his Council seat so we are still left with him. (Maybe he can do less damage as a Councillor??) In theory Council could reappoint Chin Lee.

Reappointing a councillor who resigns to run federally or provincially and loses would be a good precedent. It’s much cheaper to organize, minimizes disruption and respects the will of the electorate. It also increases the likelihood that the councillor resigns for the election period, which is the responsible thing to do. This would essentially make it an unpaid leave.

Personally I believe that if you want to run provincially or federally you need to resign. You should not be able to take a time off to run with the expectation to be welcomed back if you lose.

After 15 years in office, Ward 31 (Beaches-East York) Councillor Janet Davis is ending her career in municipal politics.

“I'm announcing that I won't be seeking re-election in the 2018 municipal election,” Davis said in an interview with Toronto.com at her East York home on June 12. “I have thought about it for some time and I've been back and forth, but I am now solid that this is the right decision and the right time, and it's time to pass the mantle.”

Big loss for Toronto council. I really like Diane Dyson... she is very active in east-end community planning and social issues.

I've known the councillor since before she joined council. We're not super close but I would certainly consider her a friend.

She's been a champion of this community and of increased fairness and opportunity for the disadvantaged for as long as I can remember.

I wish her well in whatever life brings her.

As to Ms. Dyson, given my work over the years, I'm surprised to say, I don't remember encountering her.

At first blush, she seems a worthy successor, I look forward to some details on her candidacy.

Good Bye! :p She should take a few Councillors from both the left and right with her.

I am with everyone else. You shouldn't be allowed to be a councillor while running for something else. DMW should have resigned his seat, no matter the result.
