16 People Shot Over Holiday Weekend
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In Nashville, 16 people were shot and three people were stabbed between Thursday and Monday night, according to Metro police.
Police said someone opened fire on a car full of family members along Eden Street in West Nashville Monday night. A woman and her son were shot.
Police said the shootings over the Memorial Day weekend were not related. Several of them involved juveniles or young adults.
Police said some of the victims aren't willing to cooperate.
"We also had some juveniles who appear to know who shot them and again those juveniles appear to want to settle their differences using a weapon," said Kristin Mumford, Metro police spokeswoman.
"I know that the police department can't be everywhere the shootings transpire, but the community has to step up," said community activist Earl Jordan.
On Thursday, someone was stabbed on Charles Daily Boulevard. Nearly three hours later, a 16-year-old girl was shot on Acklen Avenue.
At 5 p.m., there was another shooting on Yelton Court. At 5:30 p.m., there was a shooting on Lischey Avenue and Grace Street.
At 7:45 p.m., Metro police responded to a man stabbed to death on Jones Avenue. Later, two people were shot at 16th Avenue and Buchanan Street.
All was quiet on Friday, but Saturday was a different story, according to Metro police.
At 2:20 p.m., three people were shot along Rosedale Avenue. At 5 p.m., a man was shot while sitting in his car along Jefferson Street.
Around 9:30 p.m., a gunshot victim was taken to Skyline Medical Center.
At around 10 p.m., three juveniles were shot at a party on Mexico Drive.
On Sunday, a man was stabbed at a pub on Nolensville Road. Later in the day, a 16-year-old was shot while walking down Lewis Street. Later that night, police also responded to two domestic stabbings.
Jordan is calling for parents, churches and others to come together to help prevent violence.
"You have to step up. You have to know where your children are," he said.
Police echo the same thing because they can't do it alone.
Detectives said Anton Rucker is responsible for one of the 16 shootings. He got into an argument on Acklen Avenue on Thursday and shot a 16-year old girl.
If anyone knows his whereabouts, call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME. Callers may remain anonymous. They could also qualify for a cash reward.
