1 Unique Toronto Taxicab Colour?

It recently struck me how hard it is to spot a taxi on Toronto streets. At times it is very difficult to distinguish Toronto Police cruisers and most lighter/white taxis. Also, the dozens of cab companies have distinct lighting fixtures on their roofs, making it even harder to distinguish a taxicab in our fair city. Tourists complain that our cabs lack a distinguishing feature, colour, or phone number. How about a NYC-style* taxi colour for Toronto??? Yellow cabs tell visitors and residents that "I am in New York", what colour should the city make mandatory for all Toronto Taxis? ... Orange? Green? ....

* Granted all NYC taxis are regulated by one governing body, etc and Toronto's industry is dominated by 5 or 6 large private corporations.

This may not be possible but what do you guys think?

This was discussed here a couple of years ago and I think the city was considering it. Not sure what happened to that idea though. I would prefer a violet colour myself.

I've never had any difficulty finding a cab. Is this really necessary?

I wouldn't mind so long as the colour was distinctive--something that could eventually say "Toronto" to people, like yellow cabs do for NY (although they are also yellow in many US cities). Maybe lime green?

These orange and turquoise ones stick out

Better than colour, why not mandate a unique car be used for all new taxis?
It would be a great way of promoting fuel cells or otherwise alternative vehicles.

The new cab could follow the rules:
a) 6 spacious seats in 2 sets facing eachother
b) Raising seats and lowering platform for wheel chair accessiblity
c) Strict emissions controles (possiblity of 0 emissions)
d) Clear LCD screen in each car indicating the current fare and estimated fare and time to the desired location using GPS and recent traffic reports

To promote the crossover, companies complying with these rules would receive tax incentives and/or have access to ROWs in Toronto

I'm sure one of the car companies would pay for something like this. And no need for re-naming NPS.

Never had a problem finding a cab either. Unneeded regulation, this idea.

Its definitely needed with the way many cab drivers drive... they need to be a bright colour so cyclists, pedestrians, and cars can spot them and get out of the way in time to avoid a collision.

The vast majority of cab drivers have a hard time already eking out a living without having to impose additional and unnecessary burdens.

I've never had a problem spotting a car with a light on the top, and I don't get them confused with police-cars, since police lights are drastically different in size and colour.

Maybe put giant floodlights on the top of each one, so all we have to do is find the nearest giant beam of light? :)

Then we would have birds flying into cabs.

I wouldn't mind one unique design or palate for a taxi. Does anyone know of any other city that has all their taxis under one company, and all their taxis with the same color, other than NY? I like Orange and Green like Beck taxis. Would that be a good idea, to have one taxi company administered by the city?
