Yonge Street Revitalization (Downtown Yonge BIA/City of Toronto)

This thread consists of 71 pages of people saying "Yonge Street sucks" to one degree or another. Get a grip!

Yonge Street Revitalization (Downtown Yonge BIA/City of Toronto)

Yonge Street is far too decrepit to ever look anything like that. Not that the city would ever even attempt to go to such length to begin with.

I have no doubt that REM will be awesome for the people who will have access to it, I just hope that it will become a city-wide system. I chose to live near the metro, I didn't wait for the metro to chose me. I live next to De Castelnau on the blue line (a few blocks away from Jean-Talon metro)...

Don't get me wrong, I love the REM and am really excited to see it running but it only serves the west side of the city. I hope it will be extended north, east and into the southwest. Until then it will only be 1/3 to 1/2 of a system. But it's super cool!

Well there's no set definition of what constitutes S-Bahn so you can call anything S-Bahn. Saxony-Anhalt calls their local transportation network S-Bahn whereas neighbouring Brandenberg and Berlin would designate the same trains Regional Bahn (RB), a category that fits between Regional Express...

I'll call you on my factual incorrectness. Go ahead. Feel free to correct me. I'm curious. I always welcome new information, even if it proves me wrong!

Well yes, REM may be considered S-Bahn but it only covers half the city. Until it covers the entire city, it's no S-Bahn system. The beauty of the S-Bahn system in Berlin is that it is so robustly supported by equally well developed regional trains, U-Bahn, trams, buses, etc. I applaud all...

Well that's fine, GO has one diesel train that chugs along its one route at near S-Bahn frequencies and it may be electrified some day, hopefully before most of us are all dead.. and that would be the one line..cool! Toronto will claim it has an S-Bahn! (and believe me, Toronto will. Lakeshore...

I'm sure that the global hedge fund who remotely and relentlessly lobbied City Hall will make good on their promise and install a Starbucks and Shoppers.. and an art 'thingy'. Don't forget the value of the art thingys and pocket parks lol!

Well that's interesting. But what if you have actually lived in a number or cities (as an adult) and have actually had the opportunity to compare one to the other and therefore, can't help but.. you know, make a comparison? What then? I mean, even if you're from Toronto it doesn't take much...

I'm not sure if you're asking about the Toronto direction or Berlin. I'll assume Berlin. Berlin has more transit than all Canadian cities combined, and I mean ALL CANADIAN CITIES COMBINED, that's how much we suck. I love that you can go to furthest suburbs, even outside the city, 24/7. I love...

I guess this attitude is part of what led to my departure from Toronto. It's not the aspirational "We should try to beat the best! No, the Toronto attitude is "We've picked the 10 worst aspects of what great world cities do and we also do the 10 worst things therefore.. we must be a great world...

Can't wait until this becomes yet another condo podium with empty for 5 years retail! I only hope that the 19th century Heritage Hydro Poles will be preserved! (they will be, Toronto is serious about Heritage Conservation)

Exactly! Many cities (mostly North American) have heritage hydro poles but they don't feature them in their central areas or on high streets, they relegate them to side streets or alleys. Not in Toronto though, where apologists will defend ugliness to the bitter end.

Dude, Toronto is no longer about livibility, it's about profitability (for global hedge funds). If you're not with the program then go to some loser, livable city. Besides, think of the skyline! The all-important skyline! 9.9/10 of internet skyline lookers will tell you how important the skyline...

Getting rid of the metal stairs made me not care about this from the very outset.

I did. I didn't like the direction Toronto was taking so I left. I tried a number of other places until I finally settled on Montreal, a place I had always gone to to have fun and a city that I had always found to be so refreshingly 'different'. Although to be honest, I would have never left...

I hooked my card up to BIXI and Communauto, can use it for either one. I laughed at the free ride feature until I caught myself saying "You don't have to pay, you're my guest" to a buddy one night. Have used that on several occasions when I'm trying to dissuade people from taking a cab (I refuse...
