Rumors started to fly about HBC wanting to either sell off its Saks division and/or close its Saks stores in Canada due to their drastic under-performance. Wonder what would happen under such a scenario to malls like Sherway which would suddenly find themselves with massive anchor space.

Not sure what the big issue is regarding Russian business people purchasing property; a Saudi prince owned the Royal York for years and nobody complained. Believe it or not, not everybody in Russia knows Putin. As Canadians, don't we get upset with the "Do you know Joe from Canada" questions...

Saw the same thing in their Square One location, which also closed. I can't imagine that having employees stand around starring at customers walking by boded well for business.

Apple is a company notorious for secrecy regarding its business, including the location of future stores. Therefore, anybody proposing to have "inside" knowledge about where a store may open is talking out of their ass, plain and simple!

From what I've heard and observed, you're probably right. Word on the street is the mall's traffic has plateaued in recent years and the new wing has done little to stem the hemorrhaging of customers to nearby Square One. The newly opened De Beers store seems to be a bust and it escapes me why...

Uniglo is almost assuredly going to open at Square One, especially now that Yorkdale is confirmed (the two malls are both owned by the same landlord). Plus with Mississauga's large Asian population, the demographics certainly warrant a store there.

American deja-vu??? In terms of their Canadian strategy, Saks seems to be repeating the same mistakes that got them into trouble in the States; opening too many stores, many in markets that were either over-saturated or couldn't support luxury retail. Toronto certainly is a wealthy city but...

I know we've all been down this road before but I'll say it again, Wal-Mart needs to go before Square One will be taken seriously by tenants like those. Perhaps the freeing up of land around the mall is part of a strategy to re-locate Wally's to a stand alone spot outside the shopping centre...

Marks is generally not a mall-formatted type of store. However, given the amount of new space Square One has to fill now, I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility.
