    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Oh I see, you were referring to streetcars in their own right of way separated from traffic. My bad, I missed that part.

Dundas too, although it's only small sections that are currently separated.

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

How the cheapest form of transportation ever got associated with elitism of all things is one of those things that will break your brain if you try to make it make sense.

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

This isn't the choice we're facing though. Bike lanes improve economic output and their effect on car traffic is negligible at most. So the choice is: -remove bike lanes and get the same amount of congestion, worse economic output and worse safety -keep bike lanes and get the same amount of...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

I've heard good things about Merida but I haven't been there myself. But your first pic is similar to what impressed me about Mexico City - the amount of greenery and landscaping on their major streets. Trees, shrubs, linear parks, and the sidewalks are largely made of stone or unit pavers. Here...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

Ironically enough, Mexico City has lots of bike lanes and they make it pretty easy to get around if you don't want to cram onto the metro or metrobus.

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

If Ford gets reelected he's definitely not going to stop at Yonge, Bloor, and University, so this doesn't surprise me at all. And he's not going to stop at bike lanes either. The Fords have ranted about streetcars for decades, maybe those will be next in his crosshairs. Maybe the long dead...

    Toronto Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

I feel like Union is now big enough that there will always be construction in one form or another. The big stations in Japan for example are always being improved or expanded in some way.

    2024 United States presidential election

I've seen a lot of people saying stuff like this... So they go and vote for someone who's going to make things even more expensive. Leopards, faces, etc. The question is how many people will actually reflect on their choices or will they double down on their beliefs and continue to blame...

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

People from Ottawa and Montreal often fly through Pearson, so a high speed train would replace a flight for that first leg. It can go in the opposite direction too. Some international cities have better connections to Trudeau than Pearson.

NYCC was built over a period of several decades.

    VIA Rail

You're overestimating the roughness of the terrain. The route passes through around 80 km of Canadian Shield. The rest is mostly farmland. There are no mountain ranges and there's probably no need for tunnels. HSR lines go through harder terrain in places like California, Italy and Spain. It's a...

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

^Toronto has been learning about bike lanes and overall street design from other cities, which is why we're seeing more separated bike lanes, protected intersections, pedestrian friendly intersection design, and narrower vehicle lanes. It's behind cities like Vancouver on those things but it's...

    VIA Rail

In close to a decade of discussion about HFR I haven't seen a compelling reason why the Havelock sub is too good to be true.

    VIA Rail

Where? That former rail line (now a trail) ends at Bethune Street and isn't intact through downtown Peterborough. What are you proposing for it to get to the canal, let alone cross it? Lindsay has the same problem, although through a less dense area, plus the Scugog River is another branch of...

Do you mean the canal in Peterborough? I may have missed some messages.

    VIA Rail

This potential route has a couple problems. It's roughly 25 km longer to get to Peterborough than the CP line. We just got through pages of talk of bypassing Ottawa to save that much distance yet again. Imagine bypassing one of the biggest destinations on the line and then adding it back to...

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Welcome to CBC News. Tonight: why we can't have nice things.

    VIA Rail

And using the HFR route, skipping Ottawa would save even less distance. Likely no more than 10-20 km. Maybe it's because the 401 doesn't go through Ottawa, but people tend to think that it's way more out of the way than it is. In reality a line going from Toronto to Ottawa to Montreal is...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Strong mayor powers aren't intended to actually empower mayors. They're intended to help mayors aligned with Queens Park push provincial priorities through city councils.
