    VIA Rail

Also, it takes 9-10 hours to drive from one end of the island to the other.

    VIA Rail

Kinda debatable. I'm not sure a one-time payment of $800 million quite makes up for it. The TCH is okay, but truck traffic (and winter studs) takes a major toll on it. The railway's problem was also its incompatible narrow gauge, though of course passenger service was gone by the 70s. Also...

    Mayor John Tory's Toronto

Well don't forget that the Sheppard subway has spurred the fantastic condo development next to a snobby mall at Bayview and a couple nondescript towers wedged in between Ikea and Canadian Tire. Nothing lovelier than living next to the 401 and somewhere you get cheap meatballs.

    Mayor John Tory's Toronto

Can we please take the Scarborough subway debate back to its dedicated thread? And FYI, it was Karen Stintz who brought the Line 2 extension to STC forward as a platform for her failed mayoral campaign. Ford was already irrelevant by that point.

Debate on the merits of the Scarborough Subway Extension

OneCity is absolutely using that argument, amongst numerous other shifting goal posts. I fail to see how 7 trains an hour is bad. I think it's generous to suggest that the SSE is truly "funded".

Debate on the merits of the Scarborough Subway Extension

All through this you are engaging in a false dichotomy that assumes that having to make a transfer at Kennedy implies a lack of "connection". This similarly assumes that most people in Scarborough are single-mindedly headed downtown, even though it's been repeatedly shown that intra-Scarborough...

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Why is it not relevant to compare Toronto's in-progress and proposed LRT network to a city which has a well established one? (and which has planned expansion) In an apple to oranges comparison, perhaps that's true overall since Calgary has annexed areas and spread ever outward, but certainly...

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

I'm in Calgary this month and have ended up taking the LRT a fair bit. Last week I had to journey to the extreme southern end of town for a session at a new hospital. I suppose I had a "one-seat ride" all the way; that is, until I had to transfer to a bus. In any case, it's a pretty nice way to...

    King Street (Streetcar Transit Priority)

Calgary reserves all of 7th Ave through downtown for the LRT (it's even a fare free zone). Of course King St and most of TO's downtown is a lot more vital and crowded than Calgary's, but transit-only seems to work well there, even in a city that's generally very spread out. So it can be done.

What's the future for the NDP?

Hang on. If Singh were a federal MP, no one would be suggesting he resign his seat. Certainly giving up leadership positions in the ONDP is reasonable, but there's no obvious reason why running for federal leadership in itself is a reason he can't be an MPP.

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Somehow they manage to brave outdoor LRT stations in Calgary and Edmonton. I've heard it's colder there. Of course, stations like Yorkdale and Davisville tend to be pretty drafty.

    2018 Ontario Provincial Election Discussion

This x 1 million. What tears me about this "pharmacare" is how useless it is. Most 24 year olds to say nothing of most children are not on any medications. Those that are have coverage from their parents if available. If their parents don't have benefits, then they would benefit from this. But...

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

It's a horribly wide street that cars speed down constantly. Outside rush hour it's not usually that bad, though. Apart from the immediate area around Mel Lastman Square, there's been little done to improve the streetscape. I'd also say that University with its proximity to Queen's Park, UofT...

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

The lion's share of the development between Finch and Sheppard dates from the late 90s at earliest. Many of the condos appeared in the early 2000s, with things like Empress Walk appearing in 2000. Now that was a while ago, but it's important to mention that North York Centre station opened way...

    The Irish

It would be common enough in early 1900s Toronto to see "Help Wanted" signs in storefronts with the proviso that "Irish and Jews need not apply". That was hardly the least of it.

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Oh, yes, I've always remarked on the "mass residential development" next to Sherbourne or Bathurst or Dufferin, to say nothing of fine examples of urbanity as Kipling and Warden. Or anywhere from Downsview to Eglinton West. Or Lawrence or Summerhill or Rosedale. Even in North York it wasn't...

Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Scarborough people are unable to avail themselves of GO trains? And before someone talks about the "fare premium", it's worth remembering that the entire city will be subsidizing this "transfer free ride" with Rob Ford's subway surcharge tax.

Canadian Soccer Association to bid for 2026 World Cup

Seems to me it would make a lot more sense to have more games in Mexico.

    The Irish

Plenty of Nova Scotians (and other Maritimers and Newfoundlanders) have family around the country (the reverse also being true of course).

I hear those things are awfully loud.
