    GO Transit Electrification | Metrolinx

IMHO, battery trains are more likely to happen than hydrogen trains. There's vastly far more than enough power in modern lithium batteries to power a 12-car BiLevel GO train carrying 2000 passengers. The devil is in the details (EMU design, coach design, and/or locomotive design, cost of the...

My Twitter conversation Hopefully they’ll pay attention to these procedures.

Ontario legalizing e-scooters!!! (Bird, Lime, segway, electric kickscooter, micro mobility, electric skateboards)

It appears Bird is deploying scooters in Toronto as we speak. This appears to be a relatively covert deployment, but there’s some bungling going on:

    VIA Rail

It almost seems like an inverse law though -- the lighter the railcar, the heavier the paperwork needs to be -- sometimes by an order of magnitude or two. (See: Trying to bring European style lightweight rail cars to North America).

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Hopefully Metrolinx is using this time to speed up much-needed rail maintenance & modifications for the era when GO service increases again. It is a rare opportunity that they might as well take advantage of, if possible.

    Toronto Bike Share

SoBi is a dockless system with hubs / stations. In another perspective, it is a "dock-optional bikeshare system". There's just simply a $1.00 "penalty" (er, "convenience fee") when you dock them at poles or ordinary bike stations. SoBi have an electronic U-bar that can "dock" anywhere. That...

    Toronto Bike Share

SoBi ran a successful GoFundMe + Hundreds of thousands of donations by residents. About $70K GoFundMe and about $200K business donations outside GoFundMe + $140K expected revenues. https://ca.gofundme.com/f/save-sobi-continue-the-bike-share-operations I think it is one of the first time in...

    Hamilton Hamilton Line B LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Nontheless (after the current priorities), I think that 2022-2023 politics will declare what our rapid transit system looks like. We should begin soon with express bus upgrades -- so Feds should accelerate this...

    Hamilton Hamilton Line B LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

I've been expecting LRT resurrection politics. It certainly does have an LRT favouring. Maybe economic stimulus funding after COVID-19 is over.

COVID-19 Measures (updated list at top of thread)

Ugh. That puts the cash-strapped at a disadvantage. Hamilton just stopped collecting fares altogether -- HSR buses are free of charge for the next while. The driver area has been cordoned off, and people board through the rear.

    Hamilton Hamilton Line B LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Metroifying the Hamilton LRT would be quite interesting, but that sounds a bit Scarborough in budget outsizedness. But it will become necessary if we bump Hamilton LRT to year 2040. I think the LRT will be resurrected much sooner than that.

    Hamilton Hamilton Line B LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Remember. I am an Ottawan, born Ottawa. Sure, the LRT is teething problems. But that's irrelevant to this topic; properly built LRTs are good. 2007: Ottawa's light rail deal dead for good Guess what? In late 2008, in a stimulus-minded move, Ottawa resurrected an EXPANDED LRT plan. (City...

    Hamilton Hamilton Line B LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

I think what just happened is COVID-19 just made Hamilton LRT even more so an election 2022 issue. I think the study will be discussed, then backburnered due to COVID-19, and mulled appropriately -- and in late 2021, hints of electioneering moves will begin. We'll all be vaccinated from...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Due to an essential transaction, I was on yesterday's 6:30pm express Union to West Harbour. It was emptier than usual, only 1-2 persons per quad on most coaches. I had a quad to myself! Rarely see peak expresses that sparse.

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Hello. I present you, a thread I created: 25-Year Masterplanning (TTC 1950s/60s, Network 2011, GO 2020, Metrolinx 2031, Metrolinx 2041) There is already major work towards electrification being done. For example, the new Whitby maintenance facility has those electrification portal mounts...

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Reminder, peeps. The official Metrolinx plan appears to be: --> EMU-only offpeak on Barrie line --> Bombardier BiLevels during peak on Barrie line, electric loco driven (concurrent with EMUs) This is the current GO Expansion plan, already released in 2018 after Ford was elected. OFFPEAK...
