A true rapid transit connection between downtown Ottawa and Gatineau would involve a tunnel under the Ottawa River, which is not going to happen.

From what I recall (and it's been a few years since I lived in Montreal) the rail line along the shore runs at street level directly through the old port, a major tourist area with a ton of foot traffic. It would be difficult to grade separate it as an REM line without tunneling.

Why can't VIA passengers just use the new York and Bay concourses to board? Never understood why they needed a separate passenger waiting area in the first place.

Looking at the Front and Parliament intersection on Street View - is it known yet exactly where the station is planned to be constructed? I assume it'll be either the Budget car rental site or the vacant lot directly north of the data centre.

Indeed. My guess is that Via's poor quality signal is mainly due to the rural areas their trains pass through, conditions that the (mostly) GTA confined GO trains won't have to deal with.

I agree with a lot of this, especially the unfortunate "build only when we have absolutely no choice" Canadian ethos. As an aside, I've noticed that US transit systems tend to use male voices for automated stop announcements, whereas in Canada it's almost always female. Wonder why that is.
