When it comes to electrical/electronic devices, I would never, ever buy something from Amazon unless it was a known brand; certainly not from some unknown third-party seller. I realize even the brick-and-mortar commerce isn't perfect but how Amazon gets away with some of the dangerous junk they...

    Hosting a summer Olympic games

The facilities need to be at, or able to modified to the Olympic standards, whatever they may be. Somebody's gotta pay for that. If the box office is purposely smaller, obviously there is a reduced revenue stream. Don't forget that the IOC is a non-profit that is largely funded by the games...

    Hosting a summer Olympic games

If it were just about the athletes they could perform in their home country and simply mail in the results or have them compete is some kind of Soviet-esque warehouse. Without attendance, you are down to having the whole thing paid for by media rights. Part of the funding schtick for hosting a...

And people shouldn't necessarily interpret that to mean they will obtain certification from those organizations. They often just mean 'do you want the logo'.

In addition, museums and art galleries on the level of the ROM and AGO have international prominence and deep pocketed benefactors so there is much more at stake if the province wanted to play populist silly bugger. Both have holdings that are valued into the millions and at least some of it...

    Hosting a summer Olympic games

It's one thing to spread events around the area of a host, but to call Los Angeles the host when some of the venues are over 1300 miles and a couple of time zones away is a bit much. Why not simply say 'host country'. That would be like the London games having some venues in Berlin. I suspect...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

Those numbers would be understandable and perhaps acceptable if our unemployment rate was 0%.

    Hosting a summer Olympic games

I tried in vain to find comprehensive standards or requirements document for Olympic venues. Minden and other existing venues might have been suitable for the Pan Am Games but I don't know if it would meet Olympic standards. In whitewater, and other similar sports, 'degree of difficulty'...

Plus an Olympic-grade track and field venue, aquatic venue, cycling venue, white water venue. It goes on and on.

According to a CPKC comment on the fire, the trestle has been out of service since 2022.

Other Canadian municipal and provincial news

That break was in a main trunk line in the vicinity of 2 metres in diameter. The adage of 'if you can be a shining example, at least be a dire warning' comes to mind, or at least should to other municipalities with aging infrastructure.

    General railway discussions

It depends on what is being discussed. Some are talking about pax/commuter rail from Pembroke to Ottawa. In that regard, the former CP and CN routes are only proximate at Pembroke. South of that they diverge significantly. At some magic point, trying to knit together a bunch of abandoned...

    General railway discussions

Jeez. I hope you're not fronting for a private equity firm. They'll just bleed the assets. It would be like the railway version of Tim's. One question you (as head honcho of said pile-o-dough/debt company) would want to ask yourself is what would the re-layed Ottawa Valley route do for your...

    Hosting a summer Olympic games

I don't know. Other events, such as Pan-am, Commonwealth, etc. likely have a different security profile than the Olympics. Depending on the security arrangements, if they were the buses were possibly escorted. Way back in Kingston in 1976 for the sailing portion of the Montreal Olympics, we...

    Hosting a summer Olympic games

Athletes haven't moved between the villages and venues unsecured since 1972. If there was transit, it would have to be locked down for the duration. No nation wants to be the next Munich.

    General railway discussions

Even with a bus service, you still need data to determine if it viable. What would the potential ridership be? If virtually nobody is commuting between Pembroke and Ottawa, what's the point?

    Hosting a summer Olympic games

No clue, but they managed to do it for the UN and EU. Winter would be somewhat easier; Switzerland is historically unaligned. There is always the problem of broadcast rights which is a huge cash cow for the IOC. They dislike any venue that is in the middle of the night for North American...

    General railway discussions

I'm not sure what I don't get; the line of logic or the grammar. The ROW to Pembroke is no longer there. Period. This negates any kind of trial run of anything. Whether something, whatever that is, "would have been worth it" is now irrelevant. Other than some kind of historical analysis...
