    Toronto Galleria III | 112.4m | 31s | Almadev | Hariri Pontarini

Oh definitely! The drive-through isn't good! The format of this location is not at all right for a city location. Definitely (although I think Burger's Priest have fallen off from what I've heard, though I haven't been since their acquisition so I can't say myself) and there are many places...

I don't agree with this idea that only architecture aficionados care about this stuff. You hear all the time from regular people how buildings are ugly, grey, dreary, bad quality, etc. If anything I feel like architecture forum posters go easier on buildings than the general public because we...

Personally as someone somewhat local to this, I hope the McDonalds finds another new home in the Galleria development. In the meanwhile I could go to the tiny one at Dundas West station lol, but Galleria McDonalds is a neighbourhood amenity 😄 There's not even really that many McDonalds around...

Cool to see Junction Point in the background of this render. I hadn't really thought about the visibility of Junction point from Dupont around here and it's interesting to see how both will make their mark on the area from this angle!

I like this but I'm worried much of these walls is just going to become the standard Toronto spandrel and mullions cladding. This design looks nice with everything in between the beams portrayed as glass, but how much of that is going to actually be reality?

I wonder what kind of retail we'll see in here. It seems to be a pretty big space, but not big grocery store big. Or maybe it will be subdivided. Maybe some kind of smaller format grocery store? In terms of context there's the FreshCo and the Loblaws nearby. The Loblaws is already a future...

    Toronto Design Haus | 52.12m | 19s | Shiu Pong | Kirkor Architects

Haha my post was mostly in jest and I agree this definitely so bad it's bad. And also unfortunately so bad it's iconic and emblematic of our city and its absurdly mediocre negligent culture. And so bad it's hilarious in a depressing way that it ever happened. Design Haus... they really called...

I'm a little scared that I'm going to start appreciating this ridiculous monstrosity for it being the iconic example of Toronto's spandrel borg cube on top of a beyond belief it's so hilariously bad facade preservation architectural moment. Like can there be a better example? Plus the irony and...

I'm not sure if you're including me in here as one of the apologists, but if you look back over the past few pages you'll see me absolutely roasting and criticizing this building harshly and dunking on it. I was trying to counterbalance that and be fair and give some credit to some of the good...

I'm going to say something positive about this building: I'm actually kind of liking the darker colours and shape of this coming out from the narrow space of Mercer St. Looks cool. And from a distance and in context of all the other junk around it it doesn't look significantly worse I guess haha...

There should be a UT forum version of the Razzie awards. I'd probably have to put Design Haus higher up on my ballot than this one, but this one's monstrous spandrel wall defacing the heritage house's context for the long term future might put it over the top. Maybe we need a special category...

    Toronto Concord Sky | 299m | 85s | Concord Adex | Kohn Pedersen Fox

This will likely be the piece of junk this city's culture of cheap (but expensive) mediocrity deserves but at the very least it will have a striking shape and presence. Spandrel Blade Runner Toronto.

In the future someone should do a coffee table book with photos of the junk buildings built in Toronto during this boom and on the opposite page their marketing materials touting how "luxury" they are. List the names of all the principals at the development companies at the time there as well.

I welcome the orange! Tbh basically every big building in this neighbourhood is utter junk and terrible in execution so that's my expectation now and just the small victory of having a warm colour is a relative win. It's an ugly skyline around here aint no mistake, but I think the orange will be...

This building is really fantastic and I hope we see more like this. That said I will rest easier when Rol San is safely and successfully migrated to a new location. 😅

UofT: Sidney Smith Hall Redevelopment (?s, ?)

You can yeah — or could, but they've suspended the program during the pandemic. Hopefully it returns some day.

UofT: Sidney Smith Hall Redevelopment (?s, ?)

I'm very pro brutalist/modernist stuff and its preservation and I feel agony at what people are doing to so many of our best modernist buildings by adding such geometrically unsympathetic additions (Robarts extension, Manulife Centre even worse — look how they massacred my boy, etc.), but in...

    Toronto 287 Christie | 24.5m | 6s | Zinc Developments | RAW Design

I think having some buildings with step-backs is totally great. Adds variety to the topology of the city and also provides private outdoor space for those who can afford that and prioritize that. But to have it be the across the board rule with the City requiring it raises the construction costs...

    Toronto 287 Christie | 24.5m | 6s | Zinc Developments | RAW Design

Why not? The setback policy creates a break in the design where a switch to new materials becomes more natural. And also the setbacks create inherent messiness and awkwardness of form in the design. This common design motif seems to be at least partially born out of the City's policy to me.

    Toronto 287 Christie | 24.5m | 6s | Zinc Developments | RAW Design

I think it would be a lot easier and create a situation where it was more likely for designs to go all the way to the top and for buildings to have more coherence if they were allowed to go straight up instead of stepping back. The city's policies on setbacks seems like it encourages and creates...
