Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Breadalbane says that it is a large tract of land in Perthshire, Scotland--better than remembering that the Earl of Breadalbane was the Campbell who got the Macdonalds out of Glencoe. Breadalbane Street, Toronto, was named before 1861, possibly at the same time...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

In 1900, when she was 20, my grandmother lived in the house on the right with the sun shining on the bay window. As an old lady she always said she was going "down street" when she meant going downtown. Many years after her death I discovered that she worked at Eaton's when she lived on St...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

I wish all the City of Toronto Archives pictures were dated. I would love to know who dared to put on their "gig" in the centre of Yonge Street (#653) and which pipeband was holding up the streetcars on King (#654).

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

A few weeks ago there was another picture of the Dundas-Yonge subway entrance with a construction worker anxiously checking the state of the concrete form. Now we know why--it looks like it fell in at one time--before or after?

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

The Avenue Theatre/Cinema became a live theatre in the mid-fifties. I recall it staged the Spring Thaw revue for a few years. It went bust around 1958 when A Streetcar Named Desire was playing. I recall seeing the sign for months when the Nortown Bus turned on to Eglinton from Avenue Road. I...
