    Old City Hall Proposals

It would be the most civically embarrassing thing since Ford being mayor; such a gloriously prominent historical monument being turned into a mall to save a few dollars instead of a civic museum? Ughhhh. And yes, why on earth does this city love such absurdly long leases? It’s like every stupid...

CBC Headquarters Telco Hotel Conversion (Allied REIT)

I dearly hope CBC doesn’t sell all its buildings. That would be incredibly depressing.

    Toronto 1Thousand Bay | 104.85m | 32s | Cresford | a—A

I wonder what the ground level/retail will be like for this one along Bay. There seems to be no indication in the renderings.

    Toronto The Yorkville Condominiums | 104.54m | 31s | Lifetime | Wallman Architects

My favourite part is that for once a material was used other than glass and a colour was used other than blue. We need way more warm-coloured buildings.

Why on earth would a military plane have been encircling the downtown? And yes, amazing photographs.

If they’re already digging the hole for this, why is there no indication as to what’s going to be built? Don’t they have to provide a rendering, or at least some inkling of what’s going in there (like number of storeys and the architect/developer)?

    Toronto The Pemberton | 215.79m | 68s | Pemberton | a—A

Hopefully no podium this time. I hope the podium trend is ending.

    Toronto 540 King West | 50.66m | 15s | Allied | Hariri Pontarini

Finally! This hideous pizza chain and Grand & Toy (and concomitantly obnoxious parking lots) have been a stain on the area for far too long. I can’t wait for them to become something decent. King is getting better and better; it’s becoming my favourite street.

    Toronto King Charlotte | 114.9m | 32s | Lamb Dev Corp | a—A

I agree with junctionist; I, too, don’t understand why everyone heaps praise on this one. I appreciate good materials, but is that enough to make a good building? Architectural merit is about much more than material detail; if the overall form amounts to yet another glistening glass box from...

    Toronto Pinnacle One Yonge | 345.5m | 105s | Pinnacle | Hariri Pontarini

All of these buildings seem to treat architecture like giant sculpture, as if buildings are just huge chunks of art to be observed from a distance in an otherwise-empty room. There should be less space left between the towers and they should occupy their context in a way that references their...

    Toronto The Gloucester on Yonge | 147.82m | 44s | Concord Adex | a—A

Is there an aA rule that prohibits materials other than glass at grade? Why is it so difficult to include a modicum of visual interest at the level that’s most conspicuous to passersby?!

    Toronto Artists' Alley | 121.91m | 39s | Lanterra | Hariri Pontarini

This is unbelievable. It’s instantly become one of the projects I’m most looking forward to. We need more of this kind of thing.

There are also examples of good retail all over Toronto. West Queen West, Kensington, Bloor Street in the Annex, the Danforth... it’s a very simple recipe: narrow lots composed of more materials than just glass. Why is this concept so profoundly difficult for contemporary architects to understand?

    Toronto Time and Space Condos | 101.8m | 29s | Pemberton | Wallman Architects

Finally, some decent density and substantial street wall in a proposal. I love it. But yes, there should be at least one storey of retail along all of the ground level faces. Can the City enforce or encourage retail, or is it completely up to the developer?

    Toronto Ryerson Student Learning Centre | 50.59m | 8s | Ryerson University | Zeidler

Anyone who cares about vibrancy, the pedestrian experience, and urbanism, basically. It’s the difference between walking in South Core versus Kensington (to offer extreme examples).

    Toronto Ryerson Student Learning Centre | 50.59m | 8s | Ryerson University | Zeidler

Wait, is this Basil Box occupying almost the entire length of the retail space? Once again contemporary architecture proves to be incapable of numerous, narrow retail, putting one business where there could be four? I hope it‘s just a matter of those photographs being distorted or something.

    Toronto Theory Condos | 101.49m | 30s | Parallax | Arcadis

Why only 33 storeys? This is on a streetcar line and practically next to a subway station. The area needs to grow up. Also, the current building is hideous and the retail in the area is awful. Hopefully development will do some good.

    Toronto The One | 328.4m | 91s | Mizrahi Developments | Foster + Partners

Why is hoarding going up? How can they proceed with any demolition/construction if no design has been approved?

    Toronto 330 Richmond | 93.57m | 27s | Greenpark | Core Architects

I agree. I like the huge street wall presence; more buildings should occupy their property as wholly as this.
