    Toronto 411 Church | 121.91m | 38s | CentreCourt | IBI Group

Wow, Church st is on fire. There are like 6 or 7 projects already. Not surprised at all considering how close it is to Yonge.

Toronto Toronto City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | Perkins&Will

everyone I know loves the new sign. Why can't we keep it there? It is in front of the city hall, the prefect place to be. I don't care about the original design of the square (which means cold and bland I suppose to convey some architectural idea), but the signs add colour and life to the square...

    TTC: Budgeting, Fares and Financials

The Paris metro has fare collectors too. I think it has more to do with the fact such action is less tolerated in Toronto? I wonder if someone does hop across, what will the fare collectors do?

    TTC: Budgeting, Fares and Financials

When I was in Paris, I was shocked to see so many riders (mostly black young guys) simply hop across the subway fare gate without paying. I almost saw it every day. The fare inspectors, who are probably too used to it, hardly raised their eyebrows. So far I haven't see it happen in Toronto yet.

how long until toronto surpasses chicago on skyscrapers?

The high price in HK is purely man made problem. The problem stems from small and piece meal land supply to guarantee high prices and profits for the developers. The largest 10 developers in HK control over 90% of land supply, so it is in their best interest to collaborate with the government to...

Seven ways to make Toronto a world-class city again

that's just a desperate claim, like other North American cities such as Los Angeles or Chicago are not multicultural.

how long until toronto surpasses chicago on skyscrapers?

I completely agree. The old town Shanghai is actually the best part, although less glamorous. The irony is that while North American cities are doing everything they can to increase downtown density, Shanghai has been consistently decreasing that (because it is too high: central Shanghai has...

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

Probably it is, but I hear about all the fancy functions such as using cellphones/debit cards to pay fare, which is really unnecessary. If it is as simple as I said, it shouldn't have take so many years, honestly. In 2015, having that kind of payment system is as basic as having paved roads...

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

really? LA's single tickets allows a 2 hour transfer (which is exactly what we need) and its day pass once tapped, allows full day unlimited trips until 2m the next day, unlike in Toronto, a TTC person needs to scratch the day pass and each driver will have to visually inspect the validity of...

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

you mean reloading on-line which takes 24 hours to clear? there is nothing impressive about that. Just a regular recharging kiosk is fine. Yes, the grass is probably greener elsewhere, but the other side is definitely not TTC. I can hardly imagine some Londoners will say "Oyster is a mess, look...

how long until toronto surpasses chicago on skyscrapers?

We shouldn't trust those numbers too much. I visit Shanghai every year and there is no way Shanghai only has 28 more buildings over 100m than Toronto. It must be very outdated. Only 256 buildings over 100m/about 35 stories tall in that massive city with 24 million people where practically...

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

Right on. In Suzhou, a second tier Chinese city most Canadians probably never heard of, you can use the fare card to board any subway/buses, taxis and at most convenient stores, department stores, and gas stations. You can even use it to pay your utility bills. You can buy this card at any...

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

except there are still too many loopholes For example, if John and Mary shared a day pass to take the 501 Saturday. Mary needs to get off first with the day pass because she has other errands to run, and John is going straight home. Then an inspector checks John and he can't provide a POP...

    Toronto 2024 Olympic Bid (Dead)

Beijing receives less snow than Vancouver. Almost negligible. But it is China. If they want snow, they get snow; if they want clear skies, they get clear skies, even in Beijing.

    TTC: Budgeting, Fares and Financials

I am comparing drivers to drivers. Essentially the same skills no matter how you stretch it. It's easy to drive the TTC if there is any difference. And lack of long distance and highway driving.

The Boom of Downtown Toronto: The History of our "Vertical City" and how we got here

Sort of related, I found this anti-Jacobs article which essentially says suburbs are good and dense cores kill families/babies http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/08/01/what-jane-jacobs-got-wrong-about-cities.html Can't disagree more. Using extremely cases of HK and Manhattan is silly -...

    TTC: Budgeting, Fares and Financials

I am fine with fare collectors. Most stations especially the bigger ones should have one or even two, but I don't like to pay the salary of those whose job means close to nothing to the city. And we all know the TTC salary/pension is the big elephant in the room. They should make what a person...

    Toronto The Metropolitan | 113.99m | 37s | Lancer Developments

I don't think this particular area so close to Moss Park needs something "affordable" specifically. This is an area where gentrification is desirable. Build affordable house where it is very unaffordable.

    TTC: Budgeting, Fares and Financials

I don't think the possible efficiencies are not significant. You are probably right that Rob/Karen era the TTC sought efficiency in the wrong place, but that doesn't mean it is nowhere to be found. Everyday I see a fare inspector sitting beside the turnstile at Queen station, often chatting...
