York Region Transit: Viva service thread

This morning I was quite surprised to find out that the Viva drivers are on strike. I take the YRT to work, but the Viva drivers were picketing at the Finch bus station, and only letting one YRT bus out every five minutes or so. It took more than half an hour to leave the bus station.

    Insurance Thread (condo/home/rental)

I have tenant's insurance, because I was required to have it under my lease. Mine costs less than $300 per year though, it is closer to $180. I'm not sure of the details of my policy, and I am not a lawyer, but I think my tenants insurance also covers personal liability up to a million...

    North York

LI Mike, Picture six is Sheppard station, and 12 to 17 are Bayview Station, on the Sheppard subway line. Bayview station has artwork that only looks right from the correct perspective, like the dog or the ladder. Pictures 19-22 are from above Mel Lastman square. Here are some more photos...

    moving to Toronto....where to live?

You could also check out somewhere in North York, like North York City Centre which is around yonge street from sheppard to finch. I just moved to the area and I like it so far. I put some photos here: http://urbantoronto.ca/showthread.php?t=9778 It would be about 20km driving to the...

    North York

Small world, I didn't think that anyone from the forum would recognize any of the houses in the area. Thanks for the tip pipolchap, I was wondering what the best way to get down there was. I'll check it out sometime, that valley does look nice from the bridge over sheppard. I don't like the...

    Transit City Plan

I've been casually following this thread, but I haven't read every post, so I apologize in advance if all of this has been said. I've lived at Morningside & Sheppard, Don Mills & Sheppard, Leslie & Sheppard and now Yonge and Sheppard all in the past three years, so i thought I would throw in my...

    North York

Thanks Chris, I hope I didn't criticize his house. There are some really cute houses in the area, I just prefer the older ones. I was looking on MLS at houses in the area, and they are pretty pricey. I saw one with a headline like "renovate or rebuild - your choice" listed for $550k, and a...

    North York

Interesting to know UrbanShocker. There are a couple Catalpa trees on my street. I used to live in one of the apartments near peanut plaza on Don Mills facing South-West, and thought that the NY towers looked "ok" poking through all of the trees. But from the ground I think they look silly...

    GTA weekly pass...best option?

You can buy a TTC metropass and a YRT monthly pass. This is also pretty expensive. I work in Markham, so i have a metropass and a YRT "express" bus pass, and that comes to about 224/month. If you don't take YRT express buses very often then the normal YRT pass is a bit cheaper. I find...

    North York

    1. My Neighbourhood. Some of the houses are very tacky in my opinion 2. This was taken into the sun, but it's an attempt to show the difference in scale between the new McMansions and the original houses 3. 4. I actually don't mind this new one so much: 5. The Sheppard Centre is...

    "Suburban" Critical Mass

Me too! I've only been under that underpass a few times, and always as a child and seeing that image brings back memories. It's amazing how a little detail can make an area distinctive and memorable.

Which song is a Canadian legend???

Wow, this is a difficult question. Since I can't choose one I will nominate a few: The Weakerthans - One Great City ("Late afternoon, another day is nearly done/A darker grey is breaking through a lighter one") Neil Young - Helpless The Tragically Hip - Wheat Kings (A song about David...

    A Sunny Sunday Morning

Thanks guys! I took the TTC to get to the distillery district walked from there to Yonge and Dundas where I got onto the subway to home. The camera I used is a point and shoot Canon SD1000. It's a great little compact camera. It seems hard to take a bad picture with it.

    Canada Day Fireworks

Where is the best place in the city to watch fireworks on Canada day? Mel Lastman Square? Or Ontario Place? If the Ontario Place fireworks are better where is a good spot near the water to sit and see without actually going to Ontario place?

got a job in Markham, any suggestions for where to live?

I'm leaning towards NYCC, it seems like a good compromise. On most days it should be a reasonable drive to markham, or there is the viva or business express bus that leave from finch station. As a co-op student at IBM i've put up with some pretty horrid commutes up there. I lived on leslie...

got a job in Markham, any suggestions for where to live?

Thanks for the advice everyone. Unimaginative is the only one who told me what I want to hear, but i'll consider all of this. If the choice is between a 1 hour commute each way from a nice hood or a shorter commute from a more suburban neighbourhood then I would choose the latter. I was...
