    Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

I would only support it if it was built with as small of a footprint as possible with compact interchanges, and on the condition that this highway isn't to provide access to new sprawl. But since it will probably have a ROW a million metres wide with massive sprawling interchanges every 2km, as...

The ROW is already there to make a RIRO relatively easily enough. There is already enough space in the middle to add a median, and then after that you just have to spruce up the merge lanes to RIRO standards, add bridges here and there so cars can make left turns, and then bam, you have a new...

They should've integrated it better into Hwy 50. Maybe something like this:

Looks like you might be able to convert it to a stack with a few extra ramps although they probably won't leave enough room underneath bridges for it.

My guess is that it is to reduce weaving conflicts. I don't know why they aren't just open access lanes where you can go in and out wherever you want. Ontario seems to be repeating it's history with the cloverleaf problem (weaving in between loops) except this time it's with the HOV lane. I...

Notably missing in Ontario are service centers like these that can be accessed from both directions: https://www.google.ca/maps/@45.8417576,-74.0684924,481m/data=!3m1!1e3

I could see this being used as a way to test higher speed limits in the GTHA. Maybe in the summer with good conditions the signs can say 110-120 km/h, and in the winter when there is snowstorms and poor visibility it could switch to 90-100 km/h. That way, we aren't stuck with a speed limit that...

MTO does have a specific sign for that and they do use it in places where large vehicles have a high risk of tipping: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.7151309,-79.5208952,3a,18.8y,98.36h,99.09t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sLRm5UsWFFWEBomZWQBi8lg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 (401E to 400N ramp) Obviously, most cars...

Although if MTO posted 40 as an advisory, usually that means the ramp is pretty tight (loop ramp). Most people probably wouldn't be comfortable driving over 55-60 on those anyway.

That does sound about right. Probably 4x4 is the limit to what most people are comfortable in driving in.

Just to revive this forum- Is there any evidence to suggest that the collector/express systems on the 427/401 would be better than lets just say, a 6x6 configuration?

And that's what so many people misunderstand. Both highways and good public transit is neccesarry. Not all trips need to be done in cars, and not all trips can be done in public transit. A mix of both equalizes the demand from the other side. In overall quality (not quantity) of our freeway...

If anything, Maritimes- Western Canada truck traffic probably use QC-117 and Hwy 11 or 101 (via Timmins) to get to 17.

I don’t understand the logic of the provincial government at times. Look at the many highway options just south of us in New York. Yes it is in a completely different country, but the traffic flow of the many different highways are impressive, even just north of the big city itself, where you...

No it's not my video. I just found it very interesting, and I also posted it here because the video prominently featured examples from Ontario (as you mentioned) and the Ontario Tall Wall.

In a way it's kind of in a similar position as the Allen (both somewhat useless spurs of the 401), although Allen Rd has lots of overpasses bridging neighbourhoods.

Highways 11 & 35/115 seem to do just fine with driveway access. I don't see why it would make a huge difference. Maybe include turn around loops at strategic intervals for better access to properties if that is the concern. All 2+1s are are just worse RIROs. In fact, Hwy 9 east of Orangville has...

Interesting. Maybe if successful it can be implemented on some of Southern Ontario's busier untwinned highways. Highway 9 would probably benifit a lot from this design.

I think Ontario scrapped those a long time ago https://www.ckdr.net/2020/06/11/ontario-not-looking-at-alternative-to-nipigon-bridge/ I think their logic is that since the bridge is twinned, it is highly unlikely both spans with fail at the same time so if one span fails, traffic will just move...
