    General railway discussions

That is what the business case indicates, bearing in mind we are talking operationally; no hope of it covering capital.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

I'd say less current Trillium as such than O-Train day 0 pilot project. It really should be possible to implement a minimal DMU service on Fergus at very little cost.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Bear in mind that a Fergus sub Guelph - Cambridge shuttle is precisely the recommendation of the the Cambridge GO feasibility study. Personally I am strongly of the view that this is the ABSOLUTELY PERFECT use case for a tram train, eliminating southbound transfers at Pinebush. Ideally I’d see...

Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

It's under 1 person / year of labour at the end of the day.

I suspect significant money, but a lot of that going to the port.

    London Rapid Transit (In-Design)

Who said I was surprised? a bit frustrated, but my expectations of this project have never been all that high, let alone since dropping the tunnel and letting the university limit frequency.

    London Rapid Transit (In-Design)

That’s exactly my point; I suspect the math hasn’t been done, and that there isnt all that meaningful a set of math to be done given the multiple layers of modelling needed. The second issue is, in other words, a far bigger part of the decision.

    London Rapid Transit (In-Design)

Is the priority improved service and ridership or shrinking the impact of providing the service? Making it either/or ends up with an obnoxious apples/oranges comparison that there’s probably no realistic way to create a meaningful quantitative analysis of.

    TTC: Sheppard Subway Extension (Proposed)

Not too much of a stretch if the Shepard extension pulls off Shepard onto the CP ROW. Which I think might happen anyway given the benefit a connection would have even if not through routed.

    TTC: Sheppard Subway Extension (Proposed)

Ugh. I think I’m going to regret saying this, but the BD/Shepard loop has been growing on me. If the plan remains to stay on Shepard, through routing Shepard trains south (to STC) using the slots opened by BD short turns at Kennedy solves a lot of the complaints about connectivity lost by not...

    TTC: Sheppard Subway Extension (Proposed)

Depends what you mean. I think a subway is pretty much established as the priority for connecting to BD, but as long as Eglinton East to Malvern is a possibility some amount of (additional) rail on the eastern part of Shepard is very much plausible.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

That kind of unexpected stuff burns time REAL fast. Think about how long it takes just to handle a platform overshoot on GO.

    General railway discussions

If we're going purely on this kind of anecdote, I don't think I've ever GOTTEN a seat on ION.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

That someone went and put a special lock on the derail without something else that ought to prevent use is honestly the wildest part of this thing. It really SHOULD just be on a switch lock. As far as amount of dark territory, don't forget that the entire north mainline was dark until...

    General railway discussions

I agree in general, but the points about the speeds being excessively cautious even given what the infrastructure is are valid. As for Northfield, the chosen solution is, again, alright, but using the ROW the line crosses at Weber would have been more direct and lined the system up for...

    TTC: Sheppard Subway Extension (Proposed)

Honestly, it’s just the way things work. The 90s were lost by dint of larger political winds, but I am well convinced that we could have got more built, and sooner, if there had not been an explicit policy of the city not planning or asking for things it didn’t expect to get late in the Harris...

    VIA Rail

You need to re-read the original post. It wasn't replace the Canadian with regionals, it was let the Canadian be entirely optimized FOR high paying and true long haul while supplementing frequencies on the city pairs that work on their own.

    VIA Rail

The only real fix would seem.to be bringing in a series of regional trains in addition to through runs…. whicih with alternate day schedules does start to open a path to increased frequency without having to run the actual transcon daily. Rainforests actual proposal would seem to be treating...

    Transit Fantasy Maps

I'm not necessarily in love with high floor given the additional station infrastructure on what could be, for rail anyway, an incredibly low cost and impact project but this definitely looks like a pretty unique confluence of short length low cost and high (albeit very peaky) ridership.

    Transit Fantasy Maps

A Niagara Falls streetcar/LRT came up in the GO thread earlier, and it actually doesn't look too bad to me if done on the cheap using mostly existing ROW: Even taking it all the way to Chippawa doesn't look too bad, though it's definitely not quite as spectacular at hitting everything you might...
