Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

Having just traveled the route this weekend, why does the RIRO section of Highway 11 between Barrie and Gravenhurst (and to some extent 35/115 RIRO section) look so "dumpy"
Not all parts of course, there are some newer and well kept homes and business, however for a fair amount of those routes the occupied homes and businesses look "old and dumpy"
The abandoned homes and businesses are just a real eyesore. These routes lead to some of the most beautiful areas of the Province, but the way to get there looks just awful.
Agree/disagree?
Ya, it's pretty embarrassing. The alignment remains unchanged from the time before the centre barrier was installed and left turns were allowed between the mid-70s and early 80s. Since nothing else changed, there was no need to expropriate any business or residence; they still had legal access to the highway. The problem for businesses was they lost half of the traffic. That's why Webers installed the bridge.

Has there been any discussion of the widening thru Oshawa of 401 to 10 lanes? I'd like to discuss and view posts about it.

Look back though the thread and you will find the info and use the search engine for it.. You can try urbantoronto Oshawa 10 lanes in the browser search

MTO has been redoing all the bridges in Oshawa for it - the plan is to ultimately extend the collector - express lanes to the 412 then 10 lanes to the 418, and 8 lanes to 35.

There isn’t formal funding to actually do the widening itself, but MTO has the last of the bridge replacements for it scheduled over the next ~5 years.

London, Elgin County and St. Thomas all back a proposal for the Province to have province take over Highbury Avenue

It's become a very important regional road managed by 3 different local governments. It's importance will grow once the VW battery plant in St. Thomas is operational. Currently between London and St. Thomas, it's only one lane each way, with substandard curves and inclines.

I saw the above post in the news last night, and the Highway 3 in St.Thomas topic came to my mind. I would for sure one day like to see the MTO also explore this idea in my photo above for the other side of Highway 3 in St. Thomas. The yellow is a realigned highway, 3, which would be 2 lanes in each direction running from the Highbury Ave roundabout to Belmont Rd. The red dots are where current/future roundabouts, interchanges, overpasses, and rail bridges should be placed. This, along with the current Highway 3 work in St. Thomas, would create a full, efficient bypass/connection from one side of the city on Highway 3 to the other side on Highway 4

MTO is in early stages of a study on how to address this.

I doubt MTO will build a 4-lane facility east of St Thomas, likely a 2-lane realignment, potentially around Alymer.

Highway 3 is really not a busy corridor east of St Thomas, a bypass would be more about creating a more efficient connection.

Highbury Avenue actually used to be a provincial highway (126), and it was downloaded to London in the early 90s.

While it probably warrants being returned by the province as a provincial highway, I doubt it warrants being upgraded to 400-series standards.
I'm sure slapping a 4 and 2 other #s on this baby won't kill anyone. Besides, I think Ontario needs to expand its 400 series network and convert some existing highways to 400 series highways, 11 from Barrie to North Bay, and Highway 115 from Bowmanville to Peterborough, converting those two to the 411 and 415. Extend Highway 8 to Stratford and then either convert Highway 8 to Highway 408 or build a 408 between the 401 in Cambridge and Highway 403 in Brantford. The 413 is being built, so that's taken care of. I am betting on the Bradford bypass becoming Highway 414. Maybe this could be the 419

If you think designating a highway as a 400-series is simply a matter of assigning a number you would be mistaken. It is an entire set of build standards.

The main problem with both 11 north of Barrie and 35/115 is direct, at-grade private and commercial access (I'm not sure if RIRO intersections meet the standard either). Hwy 11 north of Gravenhurst is damned close to 400-series standards but there are still some at-grade intersections; although I don't know about other design considerations. They are such low volume that they likely wouldn't justify the cost of either a grade separation or service road.
