There is only one flight from Toronto to North Bay twice a week. The bus is a better option.

At least there are towns west of White River. The only one east that in my mind qualify as town is Chapleau. West of White River *might* have decent tourist potential simply because of the coastal scenery. As for accommodations, in a town of 560, read 'not much' and 'basic'.

Englehart is the main base train crews for ONR are based out of. Seniority would get you to other locations. Experience running Newmarket Sub/Bala Sub may change that.

You do not automatically become an engineer.You would start at conductor and work your way up, gaining seniority. However, you would likely be selected over someone with no rail experience.

If White River could see some sort of transportation connection more than the crew bus then it would work. It would also need to have their restaurant(s) open sooner to not feel rushed to eat before the train leaves. And, maybe some sort of common room/tavern/community center is needed so that it is not just arrive, eat and then sleep.

Any owner/investor would want to see a potential profitable business before starting a business or changing hours, especially in the winter. To open for a handful of passengers who may or may not be customers when there is no other business opportunity doesn't sound very attractive from a business standpoint. Staffing in such a small community would also be an issue. There are two hotel - one with a restaurant - in town plus a couple of standalone restaurants; all out on the highway. I am only guessing but the hotels might not keep all their rooms in service during the winter.

Anyway, perhaps worthy of discussion if there was even an inkling of potential, which I don't see.

I agree if there was even a slim chance of it happening these things would be worthy of further discussion. Right now? I think a Maglev in Canada is more on the horizon....

I agree.And as much as we love the area, would love to see more investment in services and attractions that would attract more ‘ traffic’ and support further infrastructure improvements, it is not all on the goverment (read the taxpayer) to supply funding and initiatives beyond what they do at present. There has to be grassroots investment, desire, and get up and go at the local level.
 
Apropos the intelligent repurposing of old ONR train stations..... the group who have been working to preserve the Cobalt train station have just won a Lieutenant Governor of Ontario's Heritage award fron the Ontario Heritage Trust for their successful preservation of this station.

A very careful restoration with an intelligent well thought out business plan. The point being - it's incredibly easy to say "Somebody (else) should preserve the train station". It's far different and more difficult task to find the skills, resources, and hard work to make it happen.

I chuckled a little at the inclusion of bicycle posts in New Liskeard - how many days will one be leaving one's bike for? but nothing wrong with anticipating and hoping they will come. The point is, the new stations may not be classic, but they clearly have been approached with a view to what is needed in this day and age for accessibility, safety, security, train information, etc. A lot more than a 1910ish structure would offer.

Why? You think people in rural areas don't ride their bikes? Would be nice if they had an enclosure for bikes thou.

If that is the case, close Union Station as there is no way it can have what is needed in this day and age for accessibility, safety, security, train information, etc. After all, it was built in 1927, or 99 years ago.

I would argue that they should have built bike lockers.This station is actually not that far from New Liskeard's town centre, and is in an 'urban' setting.
