Toronto Ontario Line 3 | Metrolinx

And the pillars of Don Valley station are looking a lot more concretey & a little less rebary:

Hey I just noticed, how come the GO tracks don't have a big fancy bridge?

From an engineering perspective it looks like the big white bridge isn't 'needed' at all. Is it all just for show?

Looks like the exact same span can just be spanned with a simple 'plank' across it like the GO bridge.

That's kinda funny. Just a big showy arch for the Ontario Line for no functional reason?

Or is someone going to say you couldn't have two bridges side by side with piers going into the Don for ice reasons. It's always the ice!

Are there even piers going into the Don with the GO Bridge? I can't tell....

Can't wait for them to re-establish the lower Don Trail as it goes under those bridges and comes out at Lakeshore. I guess that's many, many years away, but that will be such a sweet direct route to the lake.

Agreed, it's going to be great. Between now and then, of course, is the demolition of the DVP-Gardiner highway ramps and construction of the new ones. As much as I would like a reopening while that work is ongoing, it probably would be quite a bit safer to wait.

As far as I can tell the new showy arch spans the parkway and river all in one go. The old railway bridge doesn't need an arch because it's a series of spans.

^^^^ Good perspective shot.

Yeah, I'm all for the 'showy arch' But I just smile because the above shot shows it's not 'necessary' as in there's a way more utilitarian way of spanning that gap right next door. And Metrolinx could have done the exact same for the Ontario Line.

Just makes me chuckle. But good on Metrolinx for brining some theatre to a project for once.

It's just funny because can you imagine if right beside the Golden Gate Bridge there was just a basic slab bridge or beam bridge spanning the same gap.

Can anyone give a reason why the cable arch bridge HAD to be done?

The tracks predate the DVP, so when the structures over the parkway were built the only thing that might have needed closing would be the Don Roadway. To do the same now likely requires multiple DVP lane closures over a few months to put in all of the piers for a bridge.

There's no reason it HAS to be this way, but minimizing disruption to the parkway is likely a high priority on their list, and so tradeoffs were weighed and this design got picked.

Let's be real here, for many other 𝖼̶𝗈̶𝗎̶𝗇̶𝗍̶𝗋̶𝗂̶𝖾̶𝗌̶ organizations, a rinkydink 120 metre slab bridge over a highway and a small river would not require a few months period. Much less a few months of lane closures.
