The sort-of secret: Bartholomew Bakery, a European-inspired bakery and pastry shop in Vaughan

You may have heard of it if: You’re a local, you have a nose for butter, or you’ve seen their trending content on TikTok or Instagram

But you probably haven’t tried it because: It’s in an industrial plaza an hour’s drive north of the city

Anthony Lavorato and Michael Sinikas first met while working in the kitchen at Aurora’s Magna Golf Club in 2013. Years later—after both had trained and worked in some of Europe’s most respected kitchens—they returned home with the idea of building a bakery of their own.
 

Toronto can’t seem to get enough of Italian trattorias and steakhouses—and chef Grant van Gameren is hoping that Prince Edward County feels the same way. His newest project, Rosetta, will sit somewhere between the two dining experiences, and it’s slated to open on April 1 in downtown Picton.

To pull it off, he’s working with two other big names from Toronto’s restaurant industry: Luke Haines (Bar Raval, Martine’s Wine Bar) and Jesse Fader (Bar Fancy, Superpoint, Paris Paris, Extra Burger). “I don’t think I’ve ever done a restaurant with three chefs before,” says Van Gameren.
 

Profound Pizza is the new pop-up parlour running out of the Junction’s Sweet Potato, using the organic supermarket’s commissary kitchen after-hours. It’s run by Ben Grenier and Colin Breen, who say their secret is their ingredients: fresh and thoughtfully sourced toppings, marinara made from ripe San Marzano DOP tomatoes and a 48-hour fermented sourdough that’s cooked in a deep dish pan until the edges go into frico mode.
 

Just shy of a year ago, Jacobs and Co. Steakhouse unveiled their new 14,000-square-foot flagship at CIBC Square, complete with multiple dry-aging rooms, signature hulking cuts overseen by executive chef Danny McCallum and its very own piano lounge. It seems like the go-big-or-go-home approach is working: the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants list dropped yesterday, and Jacobs climbed to No. 51—its best showing yet—up from No. 76 in 2025 and No. 73 in 2024.

Nah...that's too far out of my zone.

I did reach out to them on social media, and they confirmed that they have a new patty takeout location at TMU station, so I guess that's somewhat acceptable, but still adds an extra 5 minutes to my walk, to the annoying Yonge-Dundas intersection that I prefer to avoid...

As far as I am aware, Spano’s seems to be the only place to get a hot Montreal-style sub like "steak and pepperoni" or "steak and capicollo" in Toronto. Does anyone know any other spots?

Its in a container type thing on an empty'ish lot on the south side of Queen near Bathurst.

I enjoyed both the Biryani and the Kebabs (which I would call pakora, but that's me.... , deep-fried, battered, chicken thigh). Seating is limited to picnic tables, so pick a nice day if not getting takeway.

Roywoods is on the north-west side (at TMU station,next to Uncle Tetsu? I think there's a location still there?), so you can enter via the Atrium on Bay to avoid the Y&D ... experience.

Edit: west not east!

Roywoods was on the north-west side, at 598 Bay Street. That was the original location of Uncle Tetsu, before they moved across the street to the Atrium at 595 Bay. Their patty counter is at the southbound TMU station, beside the doors to the Eaton Centre.

Now I have to find somewhere else to get oxtail...
