Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

I would imagine CN would have a vested interested in grade separating the diamond.

They were quick to remove the rail diamond west of Brampton GO after the OBR was shut down because apparently rail diamonds cause extra wear & tear on the wheels.
Grade separation would only benefit GO/ONR/VIA as CN only runs east/west across it. It would also be much more complex than Davenport as CN needs the top two diverging tracks to connect north with the Bala. There's no point as the tracks immediately north would still be CN-owned with little room for increased GO service anyways.

Is there enough space for 4 tracks to the last GO station?

Yeah ONR will create a crew base in North Bay and take over the freight trains. Running from North bay to Macyard. Or they will run Engleheart to Macyard.

They were even offering large amounts of money to CN engineers to jump ship to ONR.
They haven't started yet as far as I know.

So back to the future? Not sure at this time whether this train went all the way to Mac Yard cc @smallspy @crs1026

Lots of ONR units have ventured south over the years, sometimes formally as leasers, sometimes for work at Mac Yard that ON couldn't do in North Bay, and sometimes just because it happened. And freight operations varied between the Newmarket and Bala routes, again sometimes by timetable and sometimes day by day as traffic dictated.

It will be interesting to see how freight operations are handled going forward. Too soon to know for sure.

^ Thanks. I also wonder if they will rename the sub to the North Bay Sub. I just find it curious they kept the name, given it's not continuous due to the Barrie-Washago removal.
The blue emergency sign at a road crossing for the new North Bay yard bypass track says 'ONR Newmarket Sub'; although I suppose that could change.

"North Bay Sub" wouldn't be that descriptive since there are lots of different railways in North Bay. I suspect that's why railways are usually named after a community near the middle of the line, such as
CN Grimsby (Hamilton-Niagara)
CN Kingston (Toronto-Montreal)
VIA Alexandria (Ottawa-Coteau)
GO Oakville (Toronto-Burlington)
GO/CN Guelph (Georgetown-London)
CPKC Galt (Toronto-London)
CN Dundas (Burlington-London)
CN Bala (Toronto-Capreol)
ONR Temagami (North Bay - Englehart)

So if they were to rename the ONR segment of the Newmarket sub my guess is it would become the ONR Huntsville Sub.

Thanks for the insights and makes sense.

Although inconsistently. Mactier is at the end of its eponymous sub, as is White River and, in the past, was Meaford on CN and Port McNicol on CP. I think if you go into a much earlier CN organization, it - or part of it - was the Huntsville sub.

Those were run by CN crews back in the day. Not sure if they recrewed in north bay or Huntsville though.

For the current train however the crewing logistics might be a nightmare as CN doesn't want to crew them(especially the passenger train) and ONR doesn't really have the manpower hence why they were offering large bonuses to CN guys to jump ship.

Do we know what will become of the North Bay transfer yard? This sale has made it redundant.
I don't know why it would be. The trains that come and go up and down the ONR Temagami sub are not simply repowered/re-crewed intact. A lot of the freight does move to and from the south but some also moves between CN, ONR and OVR, or simply stays there (i.e. GO Transit cars for refurb).

On another note, information is floating around that the first Northlander trainset will move to NB 'at the end of the month' according to some who have had to make space in their calendars.

There may very well also be some need for capacity to support any freight generated from the Ring of Fire, specifically if Timmins is the host site for a processing facility.

As for renaming the Newmarket Subdivision to North Bay, there already exists a North Bay Subdivision between Mattawa and North Bay.

Perhaps, although quite frankly the RoF has gone through a number hands since the beginning and I've kinda lost track. Last I heard, the chromium refinery was slated for Sault Ste. Marie (which maybe why Watco sees some future value in owning the line). There will be a need for smelters/refineries for the other metals and it was a plan at one point to mine those first in order to fund the cost of a chromium refinery, and that it would likely be done at Sudbury.

Other than the Kidd Met Site, which is mostly idle if not torn down, the refining capacity in the Porcupine area is for gold. I haven't heard what Canada Nickle's plans are for their sites near Timmins.

Besides, getting from the RoF to Timmins would require a very circuitous route unless somebody plans on re-laying track from Longlac to Calstock.

The OVR section between Sudbury and North Bay is their Cartier sub, and the CPKC section west of Cartier is their Cartier sub, so there's that.
