$2.5mil for that? Wonder what makes up all that cost. Property acquisition? Imagine the profit the landowner is making after buying that from the city 10-15 years ago for dirt cheap. 😛

I suspect it may be similar to the staircase that someone gifted the city in the west end.

In theory, the crossing only needs to be a hole in the fence of that property on the east side, and maybe some pavement markings to delineate whatever sliver of land the walkway needs. But now we have liability and maintainability requirements that lead to lighting, new grading and paving, rebuilt fencing or gateposts, etc etc.

And maybe a land swap so that landowner can replace the parking spaces they may have to give up.

Adjusting for inflation, about $2.3 million in profit.

I did a little sleuthing for this. The parcel fabric suggests the parking lot is a parcel addressed as 90 Ward Street, separate from 80 Ward Street, where the two-storey non-residential building stands.

A decade-old report on the city's website reveals it was purchased by the City in 1953 for a watermain, and then authorized for sale in 2012 for $145,000. A listing of property classifications for small business tax suggests 80 and 90 Ward Street are grouped together as of March 2022.

So it seems like the owners of the adjacent building may still own it, and has not given the lot up for sale.
