Toronto Ontario Place: West Island / Therme Spa | 45.15m | 9s | Therme Group | Diamond Schmitt

The pods look nice and white. The Cinesphere still looks rusty. Hopefully more work to come to fully restore these assets.

I’m not staunchly opposed to reinventing Ontario Place. Clearly it hasn’t worked for the last few decades.

Retaining and restoring the soul of its architecture — the pods and Cinesphere: excellent.

Reinventing and expanding the Amphitheatre: Good business decision, drives routine traffic to Ontario Place, people will use the grounds before and after and become aware of its other features for future visits.

Rebuilding the marina and Forum areas with architecture inspired by the original buildings and adding a signature fountain: I’m on board.

Moving the Science Centre to the pods, Cinesphere and a new building? Controversial but I think an educational and touristy science centre is a logical use for the Pods and Cinesphere year round. Return the Moryiama building to the city as a community centre for Flemingdon Park.

Therme? It’s a hulking building that will dominate the grounds, block views and put the original buildings in dark shadow in the afternoon.

The parking garage? Completely unnecessary and misplaced on waterfront land. There will be a major transit terminal just 5 minute walk away. Driving here is completely unnecessary. Oddly hoping that Ford’s land grab at Exhibition Place facilitates moving the garage to a more suitable spot now occupied by the Better Living Centre.

This can all be saved if Therme fails to find the funding and bails on this before breaking ground. Perhaps this coincides with Ford finally getting the boot in 2029 and a subsequent Provincial Government finds a better fitting venue mixed with restored forest land on the West Island.

Isn't construction supposed to be done by 2028-2029 though?

When has anything been done on time in this province? As of this moment, Therme is not funded. Further demonstrating the Ford Government's highly suspicious favouritism towards a bid that had to lie to get picked, was hand waved in anyway despite that lie being found out, and is still not funded, months away from when the province had to have the land ready for construction.

I'd say there's still a better than fair chance this doesn't get built despite the handholding by Doug Ford.

What do you mean by not "not funded". I thought Therme was a private development? Do you have knowledge of their capital or debt raising efforts?

You forgot to complete your sentence. Here I’ll finish the sentence for you:

I thought Therme was a private development on public land in a lease with the Province of Ontario subject to Freedom of Information requests?

Therme has disclosure obligations in the agreement it signed with Ontario. Read it here.

Therme was valued at less than a million Euro in equity when it signed the lease.

Therme has since notified the Province of Ontario of revisions to the plan to scale it down to less than half its original size. Does this sound like a project that has been able to get financing? Therme fooled Doug Ford of its size and capacity to execute on this but it’s not fooling any banks. Trust me, when a project of this size gets financing, someone is paying for it and you will hear about it.

I do think that this thing will unfortunately get built but the people of Ontario will be left on the hook as Ford dips into public money to build this thing that he seems to have a personal vested interest in seeing built.

carefull... close to misinformation territory there.

1. the whole "they dont have equity" or "they dont have actual value"
is just a shell game it didnt really matter at all. https://www.thestar.com/business/on...cle_20590320-b9bf-4e43-95b6-e1247a04d55d.html

2. scaling down a project to size is not an indicator of "getting financing" head on over to the ontario line to see the cheapening of what infrastructure projects looks like

p3 project is as p3 project does.

...for me OP was always ways a place to improve, evolve and built upon, and not a place to remove, repurpose and squander. And in it's current wake is the devastation we most feared in imposing the latter.
The existing areas were in great dispair. They're gone now and what's going to happen is going to happen. No need to keep complaining about it. Focus on issues that can be fixed

The government that did this is still an issue that needs to be fixed so it’s worth holding them accountable to their mistakes.

Yes, it is certainly true that parts of the site had (shamefully) been allowed to decay but much of it was 'unspoiled' parkland and shoreline and much of this could and should have been saved. Of course, sometimes 'useful things' must be sacrificed so that one can build better or differently but I strongly doubt that building a private 'spa' and, particularly, a huge parking garage on this site is the best thing we could have done. Then, there is the question of the operator the government has selected; their record of shady deals and pay-to-play is pretty clear so there are very justifiable grounds for looking at their choice VERY carefully!

...the improve part of my point should have taken care of that neglect. I do not believe ever that there was a need for a wrecking ball here unless they planned to fully restore what they're taking down, IMO. That ain't happening though.
