Toronto Eglinton Line 5 Crosstown West Extension | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Maybe I am reading the diagrams wrong, but it does seem to me that the west extension stations don't have secondary entrances. Would that be allowed under the fire code?

They literally had a press conference about a 500 m tunnel. Was that really worth the 10 seconds of press you'll get out of it?
Although the content of the announcement was a bit underwhelming, I am thankful that the metrolinx CEO clearly explained the steps that will now take place for preparing the line for opening.

April 8
Counted 3 sets going west playing follow the leader and 2 sets following each other going west with 15 minutes in between them and nothing going eastbound with green signals. All going at a slow speed.
How far west of Mount Dennis can they go now?

I'll have to check this out once the main section opens. I haven't been out there for years, other than flying past too quick on the GO-UP.

You can count on TTC using the stops as timing points for bus routes. That means that buses may not simply stop to load and unload, but may have to dwell for several minutes to recover their schedule. I can envision that leading to blockages of traffic lanes especially if 2 or more buses turn up simultaneously. I would have expected much larger pull-offs for buses on all four quadrants of all intersections.

None of this appears to have been contemplated. It's as if nobody expects people in central Etobicoke to connect to buses along this line.

Dufferin is one of the top 5 or so busiest bus lines in the city, and the 29 serves Dufferin Station without much accommodation for buses. Pull-offs with room for two buses southbound and one bus northbound.

You need an emergency egress, but that's not necessarily a full scale secondary entrance, like this one on the Canada Line in Vancouver that dumps you onto the middle median of Cambie St:

Looking at the diagrams, but I'd imagine the emergency egress's would end up in the secondary buildings on the map, or even in the same head house but a different door

In fairness........Dufferin doesn't work very well. The sidewalk/waiting area is too narrow and crowded. Its a problem for people walking through in particular, especially those with mobility aids/strollers.

SB at least has a somewhat decent amount of indoor waiting space, the same can't be said for northbound.

You don't necessarily need off-street operations, it depends on bus/passenger volumes. But Dufferin is a good example of where the absence of better facilities is an issue.

In theory, the issues at Dufferin could be addressed on-street. But the require, much larger indoor waiting area for NB passengers, escalators to the surface to alleviate elevator congestion, wider sidewalks/platforms etc.

Incredibly sad that politicians see the need to milk every last drop of political capital from projects that are already well underway

We live in process-politics hell

The sidewalk crowding at Dufferin is definitely an issue, but the diagrams suggest there is a relatively spacious plaza in front of the station entrances on Eglinton. And I imagine the volumes we're talking about are many times lower than Dufferin, I just used that because I am there every day so it came to mind first.

I would assume they have done their calculations about how many people will need to stand there waiting for the buses and have designed accordingly, but then again.... it's Metrolinx.

Approximately 0 meters.

This is what this announcement was for. To allow them to operate further west.

Even if the tunnel had reached mount dennis today, I don't think they could run trains as the tracks have no even been laid yet.
I would assume that you can't run trains if the stations are in active construction as well?

Using a sequential excavation method, as the twin tunnels are only about 500m in length. This work may take about a year to finish, as there is 1-2 metres of digging each day.

(Which a press conference at each metre on completed tunnel? ;) )
