Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anyone see Highway 413 being extended east past the 400, becoming yet another "bypass"? A quick look at the lands to the east appears to show the possibility to extend this highway to 404 and beyond through undeveloped lands.
To my knowledge, there will be. It will be called the "Bradford bypass"

It is certainly possible that it could be done, but I would say that it is likely to be a very low priority for the future. The presence of HWY 407 to the south will likely negate the need for a parallel HWY 413 extension for a while (especially if the 407 ends up being repurchased and if tolls are ever removed), and there is likely to be a lot of challenges and additional complexities with having to weave through the pockets of development in northern Vaughan, Richmond Hill, and Markham.

The only way it can be extended beyond the 400 is in a northeasterly direction. But I don’t see that happening as long as the Bradford Bypass is still going ahead.

Also, there seems to be some rumbling about Ontario trying to buy the 407 back and remove tolls.

If that happens, it would solve a lot of our problems.

413 past the 400 is never happening. Too sensitive of a stretch of land environmentally, there’s a reason the subdivisions weren’t built on top, otherwise it would have been developed over ages ago.

Never say never 😉

What if they built a $100 billion tunnel?

Seriously thought, it's nowhere near the Holland Marsh - the really prime agriculture. And much of the land is farm fields. It looks easy enough to avoid subdivisions and wetland/pond features. There might be a bit of problematic land south of Bond Lake. But I don't see that stopping a stubborn government, and it looks as though it could go along the edge, and they could compensate with additional land. Or just build some short cut-and-cover tunnels - which you see in Europe.

That section goes through the Oak Ridges Moraine which has a history of environmental backlash on development. You'll probably need to throw all the environmentalist in jail to get a highway through there at-grade or tunneled.

Kirby Road is being extended. Teston Road is going to be extended. It should be an easy drive 400-404 even without a grade-separated limited access highway.

The Bradford Bypass is way north of this highway. As the GTA grows I can see this being extended, but at my age not likely in my lifetime.

I think the BB should be numbered 89 and then 89 extended to Peterborough via various county roads and a renumbered Hwy 7. Then renumber 7A to 7.

Steve explained the project-stopping problem. Even if you can draw a line that minimizes damage, you're still going through an area where people will fight tooth and nail to keep a highway out. And they are of the wealthier variety- so very vocal and capable.

That's notwithstanding that there's no real "sensitive land use avoidance" here; you're going through parks/forests/conservation areas instead of estates and subdivisions.

I am much more partial to exploring a cut-and-cover 4km tunnel from bathurst to Bayview than trying to fit a full highway in- at least If it's that or a 401 tunnel. But neither is particularly desirable; none of this would have been on the table if a corridor were protected north of the 407.

With these conditions, it's pretty clear why further sections/phases east weren't explored (publicly). A similar debate is what halted the mid-peninsula highway; you would need an escarpment cut east of Hwy 6N in Hamilton to see the benefit, and nobody had the appetite to do it.

Like with the mid-pen, however, the underlying congestion will rear its ugly head again someday. If we can't do a 413 or 401 tunnel, I'm okay with putting all our eggs in a 407 [rail] Transitway basket. But that's basically disappeared from Provincial messaging, so...
