GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

A few interesting notes from the passenger modelling study by USEP team
- recommends cutting the eastern stub track planned for track 13e
- Draft planned Timetables for 2025, 2032 and 2056 I think are displayed exclusively for tracks 12-15 not for any other tracks. note the 6 car trains on everything except for a few LSW trains. If they do this wouldn't that mean a crazy increase in service then?
- 4 car trains in 2032 WOW

I’m glad some schedules are finally out, some of you may have seen this in the GO electrification thread, but here’s a comparison I made between the 2018 Metrolinx FBC for GO Expansion, and the OnCorr development phase schedules from 2023:

Great find.

They had some advance notice, but I wouldn't count on it being a vast number of months, some of the improvements were contingent on completing several works that have been ongoing and were as recently as the last few months; Mx does not have a reputation for delivering projects on time!
They've known about these plans since the end of January.

Now yes, they were somewhat tentative until a couple of weeks ago, but the plans have been shared between departments since at least then.

Talk about sardine cans!! Putting 1200-1400 riders on 6 car trains is unbelievable and really turning riders off using transit. I guess they have no plans to allow bikes on these sardine trains nor having a bikes coach on these trains.

I would not want to be the labour provider trying to meet ML's fleeting and unpredictable staffing needs based on ML's traditional process for adding trains, considering that it takes at least two years to qualify a locomotive engineer.

There are certainly people in that workforce who are wondering whether the vacation policy is being leveraged because ML's increased service needs caught Alstom by surprise.

The good news is, the service contract between Onxpress and ML is likely to be a lot firmer than ML's previous planning, and Onxpress may be a whole lot better informed about changes to come..... and have more contractual power to refuse changes that they can't staff.

The Collective Agreement between the Teamsters and Alstom expires at the end of the year, but I can’t imagine that the transition would exclude successor bargaining rights. And I can’t imagine that Ford would want the transition to begin with a labour impasse - so I expect that there will be a desire for labour peace at least for the first year or two of the new P3 arrangement. I suspect this particular problem with vacations is just a transition detail that will get sorted.

^^^ While I think there are countless better reasons to fire Phil Verster for cause, I'll take this one if the Minister can finesse it.

Talk about misreading the public optics.................

It took ages to walk back the Greenbelt sell off............. but this took well less than 48 hours.

The Ontario government says it will not move ahead with the planned changes to the UP Express, which would have limited stops to two transit stations in Toronto.

In a social media post Tuesday evening, Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said he had directed Metrolinx not to proceed with these changes.

“While the intention was to provide a faster option for people travelling between Union and Pearson, I’ve heard riders’ concerns about servicing Weston and Bloor stations along the UP Express line,” Sarkaria said in a post.

This is a breaking news update. An earlier version of this story follows.

Nearly 3,000 people have already signed a petition to reverse changes made to the UP Express that would limit stops to two transit stations in Toronto.

The petition was created on Monday after the Ontario government announced changes to GO Transit and UP Express (UPX) service.

As part of the announcement, the government said that every second train on the express route will be non-stop between Union Station and Toronto Pearson International Airport.

The UP Express runs every 15 minutes, which means that under the new service changes, residents at Weston and Bloor stations will only be able to access the line every 30 minutes.

The government has said the change will be offset by an increase of trains on the Kitchener GO line, which also stops at those two stations. Service will increase to 30-minute frequency along the line in midday and evenings between Bramalea GO and Union Stations, and some weekend trips will be increased to 10 cars.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria told reporters the UP Express was always meant to be a connection between Union Station and Pearson airport.

"We're seeing an increase in demand for people wanting to to get to the airport," he said at Queen's Park.

"But I want to assure everybody that Kitchener line expansion will ensure commuters have those options to travel to Union through those stops every 30 mins"

A petition posted to change.org on April 15 argues the new service impacts accessibility to downtown Toronto and will exacerbate “existing issues of overcrowding” while reducing convenience, something the organizer said “drew many of us to our neighbourhoods in the first place.”

“The changes to the UP Express schedule jeopardize the very essence of efficient and accessible public transportation for residents of underserved communities like Weston,” the petition says.

“For many of us, the UP Express is not just a mode of travel but a lifeline—a means to reach downtown Toronto swiftly and reliably.”

Concerns include overcrowding during rush hours along the Bloor subway line. It takes about 15 minutes to travel between Weston Station in the city’s west end and Union Station in downtown Toronto on the UP Express—the petition notes it takes about 1.5 hours on the TTC.

City Councillor for Davenport, Alejandra Bravo, said on social media that one in four airport workers rely on public transportation to get to their place of employment.

“After UPX fare increases for airport workers earlier this year, this change to the UPX schedule for airport workers in Davenport Toronto will make it even harder to get to work,” she said.

“These changes will also impact people in our community getting to and from downtown and Weston. Even with improved GO Service, poor schedule coordination and delays may leave people waiting.”

A spokesperson for Metrolinx said that commuters at Weston and Bloor will still experience roughly 15-minute service between the UP Express and GO, with about four trains running per hour.

Expanding the number of trains along the Kitchener Line will also allow more people to utilize the province's One Fare program, which allows for free transfers between the TTC and GO Transit lines, making it a more affordable option for some people.

Metrolinx said that overcrowding on UP Express platforms was also a factor.

The service changes announced by the province are set to go into effect on April 28.
I particularly enjoy the residents' description of Weston as being underserved while it has literally the most train service of any suburban station in Canada.

Probably had a lot to do with the favours Doug & co owed to developer buddies. Taking away a $5B windfall from your donors is not something you do lightly.

I wonder what if anything this means for the enhanced service for Bramalea...
I don't think it means anything. The Bramalea service likely would have departed 4 min behind the UP train and fallen gradually further back due to slower acceleration and lack of level boarding. By Weston it may be 6 min back which is totally fine.

Although GO service will now only be half as frequent as UPX, it has the big advantage of fare integration, so it may still take a large chunk out of the current UPX ridership between Weston and Union.

With the Gardiner going to be in a state of construction for the next 3 years. Is there a possibility that we'll see a boost in ridership on the LSW?

I ask because with developer Vandyk pretty much going bankrupt, and the Mimico Grand Central project all but dead. I wonder if it would be in MX's benefit to temporarily increase parking at Mimico station in order to try to entice new riders to take the train. Again, I said "temporarily" increase parking. Once construction on the Gardiner is complete, put the land back up for sale.
