    Evocative Images of Lost Toronto

I can remember seeing all three of these buildings in the 1970s when I was a suburban kid who found these sorts of old buildings fascinating.

    St Lawrence Market

I can't say I am happy about all these big box chains taking over the neighbourhood. We've got No Frills, Urban Barn on King and, apparently, now we have Bulk Barn at Front and George. Staples is just down the street. We'll soon have M & M Meatshop in the south St. Lawrence Market to make it...

    Toronto Time and Space Condos | 101.8m | 29s | Pemberton | Wallman Architects

I live in a townhouse about a block and a half from this site. I have long felt that the Acura parking lot which occupies most of the lot to be a blight to the neighbourhood. On its Esplanade end, this lot is the last undeveloped lot in the Crombie Park stretch from Jarvis to Parliament. As...

    St Lawrence Market

What do I make of someone who wants to end economic inequality? I think they are bold enough to look to a better future. There were many not long ago who thought it absurd to think of a world without racial inequality. You might think that investment bankers work long and hard hours, but does...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

That photo of Sunnyside Station really reminds me of the old "City Limits" bus and street car station that used to be at Yonge Street (west side), just north of Yonge Blvd., up in north Toronto.

That was very well put Mr. CityPainter.

Recreated Bishop Block / Pretzel Bell Tavern

Thanks DSC. I'm afraid though I can't find the main Shangri-La thread. I took a few more snaps on my way home from work on Thursday night to give readers a sense of what this rebuilt face is looking like. See attached.

Recreated Bishop Block / Pretzel Bell Tavern

I apologize if a photo of this has already been posted recently, however, I wanted to share the recently revealed new-built face of the remaining house/building from the Bishop Block at Simcoe and Adelaide. It is part of the Shangri La building development. I am quite impressed at the high...

Where is the nice old carriage house?

Historic photos from Toronto on this day

That photo of the old houses at 121-123 Wellington Street is beautiful and sad. Even in a state of decline, the dignified proportions of these old townhouses is clear. It is very interesting to be reminded of the beauty of pre-automobile residential structures in Toronto. Sad to be reminded...

Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Two comments about the King and Bay photo: 1. the older photo is dated 1931. It is interesting that the older gentleman with his right hand in his pocket and smoking is wearing a bowler, probably reflecting the fashions of his youth (1890s) when bowlers would have been the latest thing...

    Evocative Images of Lost Toronto

Thanks for the glimpse charioteer. Yes, book your flight indeed. Weather there should be glorious now. Actually, for Victoriana I think Melbourne trumps Sydney. I got an incredible deja vu, 'I've been here before' sense walking the streets of Melbourne. It is so like Toronto it is creepy...

    Evocative Images of Lost Toronto

One really fascinating thing about cities in Australia (I'm thinking in particular of Melbourne and Sydney) is how similar they are to Canadian cities (Toronto in particular), except, unfortunately, that we demolished so much more of our Victorian built heritage. There are two arcade...

    Police Funeral

I totally agree with Junctionist. I am sorry about the death of this police officer, but my gut feeling is this show of force has nothing to do with this particular individual. White wash for the G20 outrages and political stage management for a federal government hell bent on a law...

    Swedish Townhouse

Apart from the overuse of white, another habit of modern architecture seems to be the overuse of flat roofs. Sloped roofs have obvious advantages in wet climates. What is with the dogged attachment to flat roofs? But, again, apart from the lack of colour and the flat top, I dig this shack.
