Part of the much maligned bike lane design on Bloor in Etobicoke has started construction on restoring the second EB multi-purpose lane for a 500m stretch. But I wonder how the 2nd lane will still drop approaching Islington without resulting in an awkward merge...
It's clear now with all lanes re-opened that the cause of congestion is the limited capacity of the 3 offramps that feed downtown, and this is really only an issue in the morning rush hour and evenings when there are events. As opposed to during construction the work zone acted as a bottle neck...
Ironic that the province will spend $50M+ to speed up Gardiner construction, but this archaeology study will take an entire year. The two projects have similar overall budgets ($300M).
Great can we re-open the Beer Store and Gas Station now? Or will this become purpose built rentals? So many sites in this part of Etobicoke have been demolished only to languish due to the downturn.
The detour is temporary to partially replace an existing culvert under the Highway 401 westbound lanes that is in very poor condition. The culvert partial replacement was added to the Halton Region Tremaine Road interchange project as it was urgent, otherwise it would have waited for the MTO...

They enter and exit on McCowan, loop back along Nugget, down to Sheppard, and back to Hwy 401.
Basically there is no agreement what to do with the STC guideway yet so it's staying up. One option is to maintain it as an active transportation "greenway", similar to something NYC is doing.
Aren't there trucks hauling away excavation every day at Sheppard/McCowan?
For the temporary concrete barrier nerds out there, it is "ZoneBloc" on this page. https://www.pivotsafety.com/tcb
Each segment is unusually long, 12m, compared to 4m for standard temporary concrete barriers. This gives it reduced deflection distance and can serve as a median like on QEW...
There is more distance between the 413 EB merge and collector/express start than you might think. Plenty of weaving distance room (about 2.5km).
Volume from 413WB to 401EB is relatively low as you might expect.
As you mentioned, a lot of 401EB traffic will now be going to 413 EB instead, so...
Still have to finish the original lanes to put EB traffic on it, then complete the final median (barriers, sewers, lighting, signs, etc.). Maybe Summer/Fall 2025?
So many pessimists on here. I wonder how it would compare to this 7 year old tunnel proposal https://dailyhive.com/toronto/toronto-tunnel-proposal-2017
Out of curiosity, what type of transit would users here rather spend $50B on? Based on CAHSR prices, that would get about 1/3 the distance of...
There is less spare capacity on 407 during peak hours than you might expect. It is priced to just be on the verge of congestion in the peak hour. I don't think you could add a significant additional volume without it breaking down.
