Toronto MGM-Cadillac Fairview Casino Proposal for Exhibition Place | ?m | ?s | Cadillac Fairview

While I much prefer the Exhibition site to the convention center site, these preliminary renderings are incredibly underwhelming in comparison to what Caesars put together

And "past" denotes a period of time previous to the present, while "passed" describes the relationship of two objects.
past preposition
[...]
2a : at the farther side of : beyond
b : in a course or direction going close to and then beyond <drove past the house>

Examples of PAST

The office is two blocks past the intersection.
Turn left just past the stairs.
We drove past the house.
I must have walked right past her.
He looked past me to the next customer.

Thanks - the plan looks really suburban sh*tty, especially that miserly, miserable deck over Lakeshore. Plus we have to get transit there just for the sake of it (over other priorities)? No thanks.

Suburban? What part of the project do you feel is suburban? They're removing the majority of the surface lots and building out Exhibition place from what currently is far more suburban than this, but the design is underwhelming. As for transit, there's already a GO train, with the 511, 509, and 29 already running on site... I really don't think they need more transit. Especially after GO electrification. Maybe a track connecting Fleet Loop to Dufferin?

If we do decide to have a casino I think this would be the best location, offering the best value for the city with better transit connections than any other proposed site.

Jaye101:

Look at the design of the complex - it has more in common with say Fallsview, which has an extremely suburban, pavillion in the park feel. Certainly far less "urban" than the Front Street proposal.

It's hard to judge based on a long distance rendering like that, but it doesn't look great.

I hope this doesn't go through.

If you've ever been to a Marlies game at the Ricoh Coliseum, you will realize that the Exhibition place is a dead zone. There is absolutely nothing to do after the game and though this proposal would add a bit of vibrancy to the EX, it is still disconnected from downtown. You have 3 options after the Marlies game to get out of Exhibition place and that is A) car (which most people choose) B) taxi and C) GO train . The GO is a great solution, but you need to pay attention to the times or you'll be left literally stranded in no-mans land (then again, this is during a Saturday - so the times and frequency for the GO will vary during the week). There is absolute no walkability in this area and that is one of the main issues. With the Oxford proposal, it's perfectly located so you can walk anywhere you want (shops, restaurants, theatres - you name it).

cruzin4u:

In fact, you can argue that the Oxford/Sands (or Oxford/Caesar) proposal fills in what is basically a gap in the downtown urban fabric (the Front Street MTCC/RBC deadzone, the weak N/S connections, the dreaded railway corridor). The Ex proposal doesn't do that. Now granted the nature of the site is different - but this proposal even failed at providing the next best thing - the object in the landscape.

It looks like they would have to tear down a number of CNE buildings to build that. That will only serve to make the Ex less interesting by giving us fewer things to do and see. (if one isn't a gambler or luxury shopper) I just think it will be another nail in the Ex's coffin. How long will it be, before the casino operators demand that the Ex be stopped because they are losing money due to parking problems or some other made up reason?

This was proposed before the Casino plans so I guess it will just go ahead and they will benefit handsomely from any additional development.

The CNE are against this casino proposal, (they have nothing to do with it) so I assume they will plough ahead with their current ugly hotel plan.

I look at this area as Toronto's playground with sports, entertainment and convention activity year round. And if your going to put up this kind of complex, look at what's already in place. The convention centre, a dozen multi purpose buildings that are used to hosting large events, 2 sports venues, a (soon to be constructed) hotel, a fire station, lots of landscaped green areas, a beautiful centrepiece fountain, accessible public transit, proximity to major arteries and highways, 5 minutes from the Billy Bishop Airport, situated right on the lake. In addition to visitors, I can see lots of people from the nearby Fort York and Liberty Village neighbourhoods wandering over regularly to take in a show or have dinner.

Am I reading that wrong? It says its going to have 250,000 square feet of gaming space? that puts it in the top 10 in the world in terms of largest casinos...?

A lot of events use The Better Living Building & The Arts And Crafts Building besides the Ex. Festivals like The Chin Picnic and the Indian festival both use these buildings during the year. (when the Ex is not on) These buildings don't just sit empty all year. It would be a shame to tear them down, especially for this rather crappy looking building. (if it matches what we see in that rendering) I don't even like the look of what they have planned for the Direct Energy Centre. It looks much more interesting, the way it is now.
