Toronto BMO Field Renovations (FIFA26) | MLSE | Gensler

On that note, one of the most famous football stadiums in the world, Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, has been closed for two years for renovations for the World Cup. And this is after renovations undertaken between 2015 and 2019. Stadiums are always renovating for the WC.

It's too bad Montreal is too broke to turn the Big Owe into a passable modern stadium.

The Quebec government is currently spending over 950 Million for a new roof and other infrastructure for the big O. the project will be completed in 2028.
This is more than double all the investment in BMO field over the years.

Awesome. The spectator experience is still awful. Being inside the Big Owe made pre-reno Skydome feel like Camden Yards. That thing needs a complete gut job at this point.

I cant speak for other sports but if this render of the Olympic stadium post renovation is accurate, I would agree that its a worse fan experience for Soccer than at BMO field. Despite the stadium facilities being better the distance of the stands from the pitch would not be as enjoyable as the soccer-specific configuration of BMO's stands.

$950 million spent in renos and they'll still keep the ridiculous seating layout for baseball. But at least the roof will be nice 50 years later.

They cant afford a seating reconfiguration with that budget. They need more if they want to do that. this is Montreal we're talking about. how much of that $950M is truly going to the reno vs "admin fees" The big O has a history of this.

Too bad the SkyDome was made to no longer have the rotating level 100 seating for football and soccer, just a few years ago ( if I remember the timeline correctly). SkyDome could have had its deserved moment in the global spotlight with some needed upgrades and renovations of course. (and directly drawing attention to the CN Tower and downtown Toronto for each of the 6 games as part of a truly international event. I have definitely enjoyed some TFC games at BMO Field but for the World Cup the SkyDome would have been a perfect venue in my opinion.
You really don't see multipurpose venues like that anymore. The Skydome transforming into a 'ballpark' rather than a multipurpose facility has been a pretty strong success I'd say (as someone who goes to a lot of games every year). And the dome actually kind of did have a little moment of post reno recognition last October in the World Series. I saw a good amount of reaction from American media that hadn't been to a game in years really raving about the changes. I do think a city of Toronto's size should have a larger NFL type stadium for larger events though, especially now that the Dome is basically baseball specific.

This is a very active conversation in soccer circles but runs into two issues:

1) CMNT/CWNT don't really need a large-scale venue of that size. BMO is right-sized and BC Place right-sized for larger crowds.
2) The usual anti-Toronto rhetoric from everyone else about how a "national stadium" shouldn't automatically be in the GTA.

Frankly, the only way we get a 50-60K stadium built in Toronto is if it's unfortunately tied to an NFL project. I like to believe that Rogers Stadium is a test for a future NFL stadium on that site but i'm not holding my breath that we'll see any movement in the near future. Slowly expanding and building BMO out might be our best option, but realistically CMNT/CWNT don't need a stadium larger than 35-40K in any scenario either short-or-long term.

I dont think he was specifically implying it has to be a national soccer stadium. Just that we need one, but yes only way would be with a Nfl team. Unless argos and toronto fc decide to build brand new, but 50k would be too much even. This is canada in the end.

Why I prefaced my post saying that the idea of a larger stadium in Toronto is discussed outside of just NFL circles.

This is canada in the end.
This attitude does us no good and is a good reason why we've ended up where we have.
