PM Mark Carney's Canada

Saw a recent poll indicating that the Liberals were doing best with the 60+ cohort, so it would be a risky move. However, Carney hasn't seemed worried about political ramifications in several of this decisions so far so i could see him doing it anyway.

Carney realizes that eventually the Liberals will be out of office and he's gotta just get some urgent policy reforms done. The convenience of not being a career politician.

Indeed. Edmonton is Carney's home town and a growing LPC strong point. Edmonton Centre has been Liberal since 2021, and with the exception of the NDP stronghold of Edmonton Strathcona where the LPC came a distant third in this year's federal election, the LPC came a strong second; winning 44% of the vote in Jeneroux's riding of Edmonton Riverbend, 40% in Edmonton West, 39% in Edmonton Southeast, 38% in Edmonton Northwest, 37% in Edmonton Gateway, 35% in Edmonton Manning, and 34% in Edmonton Griesbach. Those are all strong numbers, showing growing support for the LPC in the Edmonton region. If there is a by-election in Edmonton Riverbend in 2026, the LPC has strong odds of taking it, especially as many of the nearly 5% of NDP supporters in 2025 may move to Carney.
If I recall correctly, for a one term of the Chretien years Anne McLellan in Edmonton Centre was the only Liberal MP elected for the party in Alberta, and something like one of less than ten west of Ontario.

Currently the Liberals have 2 seats in Alberta, Calgary Confederation and Edmonton Centre. They also have 1 in Saskatchewan too, Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River.

Raising the OAS eligibility age is a lot more politically fraught, and would anger the Liberals 55-65 base (existing retirees should not care). Lowering the threshold for OAS clawback affects far fewer people, and is much easier to argue for ("why are we giving full OAS to households earning $200k while we have millions of working people using foodbanks").

It's just kind of obvious that OAS reform is not going to happen in a minority parliament short of a fiscal crisis.

In 1997 and 2000 The LPC had nine MPs west of MB, in 2004 they had 11, eight of whom were in BC.
That number dropped to six in 2008.
Alberta had no LPC MPs from 2006 to 2015.
They were reduced to three MPs west of Manitoba in 2011, and only four west of Ontario.

Notably, the LPC lost Edmonton Centre by ~6% in 2006. Then the NDP won Edmonton-Strathcona by 0.6% in 2008.

I thought OAS clawback was anyone making over $148k?

Clawback starts at $93k per person in 2025. Couples can earn $186k and not have any OAS income clawed back.

Things are quickly going from bad to worse for the Conservatives... Apparently, as many as 10-15 CPC MPs are now unhappy with Poilievre now according to the Toronto Star.

"A source with knowledge of caucus dynamics told the Star that 10-15 MPs within that caucus are very frustrated with Poilievre’s leadership, but the source was unsure whether any will step up to confront him, or cross the floor.
A second source who also has knowledge of the internal strains said it’s unlikely more will cross, but others may simply leave as Matt Jeneroux has chosen to do.
The Star has agreed not to identify the sources who fear reprisals for discussing internal Conservative matters''.

''The mood in caucus, said one source, is nervous and “defeated” after losing d’Entremont, and seeing the leader fail to propose the main amendment to the budget, as the Star reported. “It’s amateur hour,” said the source.
Conservative staffers are loitering around parliamentary doors to record any MP’s interviews with media or meetings with Liberals. Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer claims that Carney is trying to get himself a majority''.

Poilievre’s MPs struggling to stay united, source says

Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party in Canada, had refused to obtain a top-secret security clearance, believing it would limit his ability to criticize the government on national security issues. Has he obtained the security clearance yet?

...and the knives are finally starting to come out.

Yes but as you can see, they're still very recultant to actually cross the floor or defy Poilievre, because Jenni Byrne and Pierre Poilievre said if Conservative MPs crossed the floor that they would face consequences and would basically blackmail them, expose their histories and stuff.

If you didn't do anything illegal, there's nothing to worry about.

...trying to be a cult though probably won't save them.
