This warmer (for March) weather means the Corleck’s brick restoration work (by Trinity Masonry, who also built Ireland Park) is about to start back up. The exterior stair assembly you see in the foreground of Paclo’s shots will be installed in early April. And the east wing’s parapet will be rebuilt this Spring in order to support a railing for the future rooftop terrace.

We actually hosted our bidder’s meeting in the Corleck yesterday for the park construction. Excellent turn out. Call closes April 14. Looking at an early June 2023 ground breaking and Fall 2024 park opening with the Corleck. Photo: Boszko & Verity (GC for the Corleck).

Lastly, Deputy Mayor McKelvie hosted a media event last week to showcase the many waterfront improvement projects underway by the City, Waterfront Toronto and CreateTO. Great to have the silo property revitalization featured. Many puzzle pieces falling into place there this year.

Some greats shots of the Corleck available in the CoT archives. From 1987 (CMC closure) to the start of this project, the building cycled through numerous short term tenants. The adjacent community centre (Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre) actually got its start in this building. PortsToronto was the last, and held on to it for about 12 years before being evicted in favour of the arts centre.

I took the last two photos, looking towards and from the Corleck, in 2018 - about a year before we broke ground on our first phase of construction on the site.

Someone erected a tent there on Thursday. Ireland Park occasionally has small encampments appear for a week or so at a time.

Unrelated, and for anyone interested, Deputy Mayor McKelvie and Councillor Malik were on site for a project tour last week. The Deputy Mayor’s office produced this short video of the tour:

A great reminder how visible the malting silos are from all directions. And they won’t ever be obstructed given their proximity to the water’s edge and park space.

That’s why we’re making the investment in architectural uplighting around the base of the fluted south silo. A total of 32 programmable, in-ground LED fixtures will illuminate the restored silos as a beacon - analogous to a lighthouse - to mark the western entrance to the inner harbour. Visible from the port lands, island ferry, flying into BBTCA, Trillium Park, Portland Street, etc. And will be programmed to automatically turn off over night in accordance with bird friendly guidelines.

Lighting design is by Montreal’s Ombrages, who also co-designed the stunning Jacques Cartier bridge installation.

There’s a lot our team is excited about by this project, but I think the silo uplighting is at the top of the list. Will be operational when the park is open to the public by Fall 2024.
