Head of Slips (Waterfront Toronto, West 8/DTAH)

did you not read the part about older people maybe being unable to sit on the ground? or maybe the part about being about to sit during the winter? Unless you're into the whole hemorrhoid thing, you're probably going to want a bench to sit on.

Also, yes, some people are too good to sit on the ground. Do you sit on stair steps normally? Probably not, because they tend to be dirty. Between the seagull crap and everyday use, the slip will probably have some spots that you won't want to sit on. Obviously benches are prone to the same conditions but tend to be less harsh.

Slip at night

Are there any images of the slip at night with the lighting feature?

As far as I know, you can't get hemorrhoid's from sitting on wood, only concrete.
As far as old people... there are a ton of places surrounding the slip where they can sit. Do we have to sacrifice slick design for old people?

People ARE going to sit on the slip. I mean just look at all the space there is to sit on it. The step up to it looks like it would be almost to my knee.
Benches are just as prone to bird shit and gum and people's dirty shoes as the actual slip itself.

YES!, Far from it, have you seen the slip in person?

Colin, you are not confused! Clearly some people like to comment incessantly on projects without making any effort to read the earlier posts on the thread to see what others say or, more importantly, to actually go to LOOK at the things they are criticising or knowing the context into which they will be built. Ahhhhh

Oh Jesus Lord, what have I/we wrought? They are benches. Just benches. Along an ancient shoreline, of an ancient lake, by a newish city, on the eve of global this or that. And are the sides metal or wood or too thick or too thin or buzz buzz buzz.

It's a little too wood-on-wood for my taste (sounds like gay porn). Metal would have been better, from an aesthetic point of view at least. Hopefully they'll at least paint them red. I like red.

A reminder - the slip is actually for people to use and enjoy - not to look at through pics from a forum to trigger the right design fetish. Keep that in mind.

Those damned benches!

Having just walked to see the latest developments at Spadina Slip I now think that the bench with the wooden supports (see photo in Posting 212 above) is some sort of prototype. The supports REALLY are cut plywood and I guess it is maybe to show the workers what the benches look like.(Though one might have thought they could look at a photo or even a plan!) I think it is not a perrmanent part of the project.

There are now 6 or 8 metal supports attached to the western end of the deck right at the water's edge, they look to me as though they are waiting to get their wooden slats attached. I think that THESE will be the long-promised benches.

Discuss....

I never thought benches, useful though they are, would be so exciting. :):)

^ those supports along the water's edge are for the rails that'll run the length of the deck.

I'm hoping that the rails will be short so that finally we kayakers get a central waterfront place to launch into the lake without having to belong to some club. The low ends of this deck will allow for that.

Judging from the high rails installed on the tier before the water, it seems that my wish will come true.

The Spadina Head of Slip deck looks terrific. The materials look great, good workmanship and I love the design. Shame it won't be open for Canada Day, or perhaps they may barely make it... who knows. I can't wait to check it out in person once it's in use.

I never thought I'd see a city project completed within a reasonable amount of time!

I walk by it everyday as I go to and from work and everyday there has been significant progress made. I think it'll be interesting to see how the locals use it since we've been spoiled with HtO park and the Music Garden.
