The location of this 1897 image of Yonge St. puzzles me......any ideas?

Best guess would be Yonge St just below Queen looking South to Richmond. The building on the left with the spires was around on into the 1930's

building with spires and turrets is the Confederation Life building, which still exists on NE corner of Richmond and Yonge.

1977 means, I presume, the underpass was completed, but not yet the subway station.

What is the 10 storey office building directly south of Simpsons on the southwest corner of Yonge and Richmond? I recall that there was a sort of vaguely moderne Kresge's building at this location which itself was upgraded in the 80's.

Here's a revealing 1940 view of Toronto Island Airport (now Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport) and surrounding waterfront. The old Maple Leaf Baseball Stadium, once a landmark, is nearby. As well as the early development of the airport, we see the huge rail-lands that are now home to the Skydome, CN Tower, condos and other high-rises.
Along the shoreline, east of York St., a large area of landfill is still barren of major development.
I have a personal interest in the circled area (foot of Spadina) showing buildings which would become (in 1941) a wartime shipbuilding yard where 56 minesweepers would be built and launched before 1945. My father helped to build many of those. That site is now called "The Music Garden" and is part of the Harbourfront development.
