Port Lands Community Consultation: July 18, 2018

  • 6:00 p.m.: Drop-in with displays and activity stations focused on the history of the Port Lands Flood Protection project, networks and connections (including roads and bridges), park programming and river and ecology.
  • 7:00 p.m.: Presentation from project team
  • 8:00 p.m.: Additional time to participate in activities or explore the model
There will be four activity stations to provide feedback to the teams about the designs. Project team members will also be there to answer your questions.

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE #2: Port Lands Flood Protection

Partial Lane Closures: Sunday July 22 to Friday July 27

Surveys to inspect and document underground utilities will require partial lane closures for periods of one hour at a time. From Sunday, July 22 to Friday, July 27between the hours of 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m., crews will be working on the following streets:

  1. Lake Shore Boulevard East (between Cherry Street and Saulter Street)
  2. Villiers Street (between Cherry Street and Saulter Street)
  3. Commissioners Street (between Cherry Street and Saulter Street)
  4. Munitions Street (between Villiers Street and Commissioners Street)
  5. Don Roadway (between Lake Shore Boulevard and Commissioners Street)
  6. Saulter Street (between Lake Shore Boulevard and Commissioners Street)
PORT LANDS FLOOD PROTECTION – PROGRESS UPDATE


Site preparation: July 2018 to September 2018

The map above shows the areas where work has started and will continue throughout the summer.


Area 1: Construction crews are preparing to start demolition at Commissioners Street and Cherry Street. Existing asphalt and concrete, as well as existing buildings at that site, will be removed.



Area 2: Construction on a temporary structure to separate work zones along the River Valley and Don Greenway will start in September.



Area 3: Tree cutting is scheduled for August 2018. During tree cutting, we will work with Toronto and Region Conservation to ensure birds and bats are protected.


In addition to this activity, site preparation work is also ongoing at a number of locations in the Port Lands. This includes drilling to collect soil and groundwater samples, surface water sampling, land surveying, pilot testing for soil treatment technologies, geophysical surveys, and vegetation and wildlife surveys


CHERRY STREET LAKEFILLING – PROGRESS UPDATE

Work continues on dock wall construction, lakefilling and marine landscaping.

Crews have completed installing the pipe and sheet piles that will support the new dock wall. Later this month the crew will start to install the rock anchor, which will involve cutting the pipe and sheet piles, installing the casing and drilling. The drilling will be vibratory, which keeps noise to a minimum.

Lakefilling continues in Cell 2 and 3 (shown in the graphic above). A total of 4,867 truckloads of locally sourced, clean fill has been added to Cell 2 so far.

Crews continue to shape the core stone – the aggregate that makes up the new shoreline. The west cove along the new shoreline has now been formed – future home to fish and other aquatic habitat. The team will start placing armor stone along the shoreline this month, which will secure the shoreline.

I really find this project inspiring. How does this addition of parkland compare to prior city endeavours? This would be the largest area added in quite some time, no?
 
interesting the LRT North Bridge appears funded and the LRT South Bridge appears to not be funded, as well as the Commissioners LRT Bridge. So where do they loop the street car?

I read it as both Cherry LRT bridges aren't funded at this time. The loop is south of the 2nd bridge at the Shipping Channel. If you look at the cross section of the bridges for the north Cherry bridge it said Phase 1 at the top with an arrow to the right saying LRT bridge not funded.

The earliest the extension to the Cherry St Line is around 2025, since 4' of earth has to be place on top of the whole area for development. This means all roads will have to be higher than they are today.

This is a 7 year project at one time with a number of development wanting to start building before then.

Since Ford is in power, he will not be interesting to invest money into a streetcar line in the first place.

There is a lot of areas that have no funding, but the big picture was always to have them in the plan from day one.

As a note to the Cherry St LRT extension, there is no dissension as to what will take place for the current RR underpass. There are 3 options and no EA for them that could cost between $10-50 million to do them and who is picking up the cost for it.

Someone asked that question on Twitter - I believe WT clarified the north bridge across Keating is funded. The south bridge across the new Don Mouth isn't.

I was always under the impression based on what took place at non public meetings, that both bridges were funded along with the loop at the Shipping Channel. Having said that, there was also talk that the bridges couldn't be built due to lack of fund for both transit and cars and wouldn't be known until 2019 when they would be built. Lots of mix message been sent out as to what was to take place.

Regardless if/when the bridges are built, there is no plan in place to see streetcars on those bridges before 2025-30, until there is enough development in place to support the extension.

The question remains as what is going to happen at the underpass to get the line to the south?? Thats been toss around since 2007.

In time, Metrolinx will have to replace that bridge, as it almost 100 year old now. With Metrolinx expanding the corridor at this time, it would be a good time to built a replacement correctly by having transit in its own ROW, cycling lanes, wide sidewalks and a single lane of traffic in each direction. This would be a clear span with one support in the centre. This has always been the prefer option.
 
Would they even want to start construction before flooding protection is done? I'd imagine the insurers might have something to say about that.
