A zoning by-law amendment application has been submitted for the expansion of the Lakeside Long Term Care Centre in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood. The plans are calling for the construction of a six-storey addition to the medical institution’s campus.
Originally constructed in 1880 as the Toronto Home for Incurables, the site has evolved over the past 139 years, always housing long term care facilities in various forms. The building was last updated in 1979 when it was reconstructed as the EW Bickle Centre for Complex Continuing Care, offering assisted living solutions for the elderly as well as rehabilitation facilities. Currently, the existing campus has a 200 person waiting list -which may translate to a 2-5 year wait for a basic bed. The new building will bring 192 new long-term care beds to the facility, more than doubling its current capacity.
Designed by Montgomery Sisam Architects, the building is to be constructed on a surface parking lot just south of the 4-storey existing building and mimic the massing and architectural expression of the current facilities to fit best within the context. The bay window element has been replicated up to the third story and the roofline initially aligns with the current streetwall, before stepping up to the sixth storey level.
Materials, renderings and additional information will come available as the re-zoning application is approved and a site-plan approval application is filed. In the meantime, learn more by exploring our dedicated Forum thread.
