Another pair of towers will soon rise into Toronto's Entertainment District skyline, as the site of the Theatre District Residence and RIU Plaza Hotel is now cleared and primed for the start of construction. The two-tower Quadrangle-designed development for Plaza will rise at Adelaide and Widmer streets, both set to stand 156 metres tall.

Along Adelaide the towers will replace a surface parking lot and the spot where the presentation centre itself replaced a two-storey commercial building that was cleared away in 2015. Along Widmer, a row of Victorian townhomes will continue to face the street while their rear extensions have already been demolished. The Victorians will be fixed up as townhomes and incorporated into the base of the new development.

A recent image of the site shows that only a construction trailer and the preserved townhome fronts remain on site. Permits for shoring and construction were submitted in December, and are currently under review by City staff. Once permits are issued, shoring rigs can begin the first steps in construction for the mixed-use project.

The project's 48 and 49-storey towers will add to the area's increasing residential density. The south tower will feature 424 condominium units, while the north tower will include the 353 room Rui Plaza Hotel on the first 28 floors, and 131 condo suites on the 20 floors above, dubbed Encore at Theatre District.
