With a full limestone-faced podium now fronting the 36-storey tower, the Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects-designed condominium at the southeast corner of The Esplanade and Yonge Street is now home to its first residents. Developed by Cityzen Development Group, Fernbrook Homes, and Castlepoint Numa, the 284-unit Backstage on The Esplanade tower is in the closing stages of construction, with cosmetic elements now completing the exterior aesthetic.

At ground level, the limestone podium structure negotiates the curving property line, though construction fencing continues to surround much of the building. Just east of Yonge, a pair of retail spaces are still being prepared, with tenants set to be announced in the coming months.

While finishing touches continue to be applied to the podium, the tower above has progressed significantly since our last update in October.

Along the east and west façades, light porcelain panels attempt to create a sense of aesthetic continuity between the podium and the darker tower above. On the west façade (seen below), the installation of new balcony glass has accompanied the porcelain tiles.

Meanwhile, the Studio Munge-appointed amenity spaces are also nearing completion. Concentrated on the 5th, 6th, and 7th floors, amenities include fitness and yoga facilities (including steam rooms), a party room, and a private cinema. Residents will also have access to a 70 foot-long rooftop pool and garden space that tops the podium.

We will keep you updated as construction wraps up, and the new retail spaces help shape the public realm, which will feature landscaping by Claude Cormier + Associés.
