To meet the needs of a gradually increasing population in Ontario, the provincial government has announced a new round of funding for hospitals around the province, including notable Toronto institutions like St. Michael's Hospital, St. Joseph's Health Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, The Hospital for Sick Children, and the University Health Network. A $50 million increase brings the new annual funding up to a total of $175 million in 2016-17, keeping with the incremental funding increases provided since 2013.

Made available through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund (HIRF), the funding will be used to address crucial repair and upgrade work for 135 hospitals around the province. In addition to the state of good repair funding, the province also aims to invest $12 billion over 10 years for hospitals to build modern infrastructure.

Funding of some Toronto Hospitals includes:

  • More than $1.3 million for St. Joseph's Health Centre
  • More than $5.5 million for St. Michael's Hospital
  • $10 million for Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
  • More than $4.3 million for The Hospital for Sick Children
  • $10 million for the University Health Network.

“With this new and important funding, we are working to ensure that we are building a health care system that delivers faster access today and a sustainable system that will be there for Ontario patients in the future. Making these necessary investments is part of our commitment to put patients first by ensuring that they get the high-quality health care they need — when they need it.” said Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.
