Just west of Yonge Street, Eight Cumberland by Great Gulf and Phantom Developments is now set to add to a 51-storey presence to Toronto's Yorkville skyline. Initially proposed as a 64-storey tower last year by another architect, the now architectsAlliance-designed project was scaled down and refined during the planning process, culminating in our first full look at the redesigned condominium.

While the previously publicized worm's eye view (below) offered a glimpse of the west elevation—characterized by a series of extruded fins—the new rendering seen above shows the tower in its urban context. Viewed from the southeast, the rendering above shows the tower rising immediately west of Yonge Street's retained and restored retail frontages.

Responding to a compact urban site, the body of the tower will be cantilevered over a slim base structure. Supporting the larger tower above, the base will meet Cumberland Street with a slightly extruded residential entrance framed by stone accents. Unlike the west elevation, the tower's other frontages will not be lined by rows of vertical fins: soperating the two typologies, an aluminum frame will span the full length of the tower's west corners.

Joining one of Toronto's most exclusive neighbourhoods, the 51-storey tower will feature 371 suites, with the one- to three-bedroom configurations approximately ranging in size from 460 ft² to 2,000 ft².

As marketing for the project gets underway, we expect to learn more about the interior appointments and suite designs, as well as the restoration plan for the property's Yonge Street frontage. At 826-834 Yonge, the Eight Cumberland property encompasses five existing retail spaces, taking up the south half of a fine-grained retail block already in the midst of being transformed by Bazis and Plaza's 55-storey 1 Yorkville project—now under construction immediately to the north. Taken together, the two projects will change the face—and the feel—of the street.
